For some reason, I got interested in the forthcoming Panther "Piles" concept and went a-searching through the US Patent Office. Here are some phun & informative links:

That is the date the patent for Piles was filed. Did this idea start with a different OS, but never see the light of day? If so, which one? BeOs?

Umm, Apple invented this, not anyone else. That's why they patented it so anyone else can't steal it.
