OK bOOzo...I have a ton of screenshots of the new MS operating system codenamed "LongHorn."
I concidered doing this theme, bit since there are a ton of old XP elements still in this OS, I though that it would be more apropriate if you did this theme.
If you, or any other theme creator, wants these shots, give me an email...
swizz has my e-mail boozo. I am the guy that made the icons that used to come with the BeOS theme.

Well, it would be easier if you emailed me since Swiz is out of town.
I'm not sure I'd want to make a longhorn theme though, but I could have a look at it.

I myself would love to see a OS X version of Longhorn.
The Longhorn theme on XP is very sweet...it's a little similar to the Luna theme, but A LOT better...I like the start menu icon better, the color of the blue, and the widgets are better...very cool stuff, IMO.

Longhorn is butt ugly. MS' designers are on crack. Good thing these are only alpha themes, and the official longhorn theme will look nothing like this by it's release in 2005.

I don't know about it's designers...but I do know they pressure and push their programmers to the point that in 6 months they're burnt out. Didn't iconfactory design their XP icons?

Personally, I like to laugh at it and then whine to my Windoze friends about how ugly it is. Gives me something to do.
Anyway, Longhorn is a bit better than Luna, but no much. I'd if I was forced to work with either interface everyday.

Never thought about it but I guess you are right. Apple should have XP's icon since it's called System Preferences and XP should have Apple's switch icon since it's called Control Panel The irony.

Um, the current state of Longhorn's interface is totally moronic. If this screenshot is anywhere near the final product, I can't imagine the backlash. I find myself having a very hard time believing that even Microsoft is capable of something so craptacular. I mean, just look at. Does anything make sense in that screenshot? I was thinking about listing the items that don't make sense, but that would be totally inconsiderate to those with slow connections (anything slower than an OC-96). So I'll list what does make sense:
1. The forward and back buttons. I know what they do! They're disabled in that picture, right?
2. The hard drive. I'm soooo glad it is working properly. I do however wonder how long the computer locks up while performing low-level diagnostics and bad block scans before the tooltip shows up...
3. The floppy disk drive make sense too, but shouldn't it be a subclass of "Disk Class"?
4. I know what "Start" does as well, but why is it disabled?
5. I know what "Quick Launch" does, but what happens when I click the lightning bolt? Do I get a nifty shock? Does the voltage coming from my power supply rapidly fluctuate while I hover my cursor over it?
See, even the things I understand could differ in functionality wildly from what I imagine. Why can't a button be a button, and icon an icon, etc. Look at the two clocks. One looks like a compass and has some inexplicable graphic behind the hands, the other looks like they let some manic typesetter have a go at.
Why not just make Windows consist of a single giant button that changes size and shape at an epileptic-seizure-inducing pace and does something totally random each time it is clicked? Seriously, what the hell Microsoft?
Oh an I think the theme is pretty ugly.

A Longhorn theme is very premature considering that the current state of the OS is pre-alpha -- yes, that means exactly what it says, PRE-ALPHA! So it would be retarded to make a theme of an OS that isn't scheduled for release until 2005...less you can see the future.

Oh my god...... nooooooooooooo...... I'm blind... I'M BLIND!
I swear I'll never complain about the blue in Aqua again!
Please don't ever let my company upgrade our crappy HP's from Windows2000NT. I honestly think I'd have to quit my fantastic job if I had to look at that all day. There will be different theme's built in won't there, because we can't install ANYTHING on work computers. My God, I closed the window 5 minutes ago and my eyes are still pulsing blue. Help!!!!

Ok-- I have been an avid user of the Jag XP for a long while now. Many of you have to use both XP and Macs all of time. Even I still have to use Office 98 -- here in 2003.
Longhorn... Boy, I like the color blue and all but... Those screenies so far are TOO DAMN BLUE. Almost Bluonic.
Max--You are the MACnn relative expert on the Jag XP interface. If you decided to make a Longhorn variant, would you be willing to take a look at this first?
http://www.geocities.com/jake_kross/
I would like to see the Apple menu only slightly modified. The Apple looks so lonely; perhaps the word Menu following it--and extending the green area to the edge of the screen as in the example on the screenshot. I'd be happy with that. But I am only one in a few... Now a Longhorn variant would be damn near 100.00% blue--
Here's an example--Start/taskbar...
http://www.activewin.com/screenshots...rn/Image28.jpg
Here's another with the contacts screen...
http://www.activewin.com/screenshots...rn/Image27.jpg
Here's another one...Internet Explorer 6.05.4008.0...
http://www.activewin.com/screenshots...rn/Image34.jpg
I swear--maybe it's me but it looks as if Longhorn uses a variation of the brushed look--a blue tint is evident in the last pic. I personally like the progress bar.
Just some ramblings--Max I hope you can use this...(If you do decide to modify jag XP or port Longhorn.)
Lyric OS 13.0

Dude, WTF is it about PC users and HIGH compression JPEG's...
They want you to see the 'beutiful' UI of windows and yet they set the quality to like 3.
NOTE to people with PC's: STOP ENCODING CRAPPY JPEG's PLEASE... use high quality or PNG.

You can turn themes off in XP, you know. It wouldn't be a big loss if they upgraded.

Well, I happen to like the look of XP. Flame if you will, but in an OSX environment, it fits right in. I don't know how it works on a Win box.
The best argument I have heard so far for not making the theme is that it is in too early of stage to create.
However...I really like the look of the start bar. If max doesn't do this theme, then I will at least do a varient of it.
One good thing I can say about all of this. Through trying to make this theme, I figured out how to make themes!
I am an ok designer, so maybe I can start contributing for once
One more thing...why the heck do people feel the need to be so darn negative? I don't get it! Come on people, it is just a theme. If you don't like it, by all means say so, but please don't start bashing the deisgners about it. For all we know, the designers over at MS or Iconfacory hate it too. If you are designer you will know what I am talking about when I say that sometimes the client insists on being right, even if you hate flaming pink with brown spots. They are paying, you give it to them.

I think all those Longhorn scrnshots... only makes me more enthus abt my design internship. (The caveat is that I'm studying Political Sci, not design).
We need more beauty in this sad, bleak world.
EDIT: "Longhorn" is rather amusing a name, esp if it comes from MS. If blowing a trumpet can be likened to blowing a horn... think how long a horn MS might be using. Blowing trumpets are the norm activity of any marketing dept isn't it?

god I hate other mac users who flatly hate everything M$ does, without even considering it first.
I've been a mac user for over 10 years. Some stuff M$ does is crap, some of it is good. The original 95/98/2000 gui is crap. pure crap. I like the Luna GUI, and use Max's theme often. I think Longhorn is interesting, but needs some work, could be good, has a lot of potential. very much the same way I feel about Aqua.
i'd like a longhorn theme.... could be fun.

Yeah, sorry I haven't replied.
I had a look at the screenshots, although I find a bit better looking than Luna I think that it's not complete enough and right now I'm already busy as it is. So if you want to port it, go right ahead! If you want you can use my luna theme as a basis for your theme, just as long as you mention bme in the credits.
Good luck!

I'm actually happy with the way it is now. Although I would like to make the apple menu touch the end, but that would require me to change the menu title selection to just a underline, which I feel looks bad.

Try downloading Izawas Shinobi theme, he resized those caps if I'm not mistaking. Or you can just resize the root menu fill to be over 2000 pixels wide and then have the apple menu at the start of that fill.

INCORRECT. You've both stated that you like at least one hideous M$ gui which makes you BOTH wrong. Everything M$ does sucks, not because I love Apple, or have been brainwashed, or because they are and evil monopolistic empire, but because, as SteveJobs says, they just have no taste. They just do bad, boring, ugly junk every last time.

You missed the point... it is COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE for someone to have an icorrect opinion... it may differ from one person to the next but the fact that it is an OPINION makes it correct, to that person.

Once you've changed your mind you will see that I'm right. I used to think like you until I started thinking like I do now. If you'll just see it my way you will agree with me completely. Try to be more like-minded and we can reach an understanding.

I hate Luna so much because they were so close to creating a actual GOOD theme, that being Watercolor, But decided to kill it for.... That abomination of a theme.
Much the oppisite for Apple, I think Aqua keeps looking better and better. (Doesn't everyone remember how the original Aqua looked in the DPs? )

What MS should have done is got rid of the 'traditional' theme in XP, (which looks an appalling mish mash because the 95/2000 'look' doesn't 'stretch' properly over the XP interface) and used the Watercolour theme as the 'pro' style and had Luna for the consumer 'look blue lumps' version.

i dont hate xp and lonhorns looks just because its microsoft, thats just a pretty moronic assumption, "OMFG HES A MAC USER AND HATES WINDOWZXPPP LOOKZ, must be because its made by microsoft"
idiot, i could give you a nice long list of things wrong with the windows xp interface and look. So just because you use a mac and like luna doesnt mean anyone who uses a mac and hates luna hates it becuase its microsoft

funny how some mac users can be so ignorant as to saying that anything coming from M$ is junk.
i don't like Luna's look that much either, but it's certainly an improvement over the old ones, the interface is more intuitive and XP has been the best windows i've ever used.
it's not junk. but it's not the best thing in the world either.
i still use a PC and would jump at the opportunity to get a mac.
but i've been reading these boards for months now and i found that OS X is not without faults, errors and crashes happen. it's inevitable and there's always something bound to go wrong with anything, and i mean anything.
i agree completely that OS X is a wonderful OS and definitely much better than Windows, but to scrap XP as junk becuase it's MS is pure ignorance.
if you don't like the looks, change them. there are tons of shell replacements and modifiers out there to make XP look like anything but XP and to make the interface more stable and intuitive.
as for the dissings on the Longhorn screenshots, they are PRE-ALPHA versions. i find it shameful that people would judge a product at its beta stages, because it is clear that it's still in development.
and these LH screens are pre alpha.
and the resolution and picture quality is very unfavorable for LH as well.
just think, low quality screenshot of a low resolution screen of a pre alpha OS. what do you expect?? you want it to look as edible as aqua, wait till 2005. and i think the colour schemes and appearance of LH is much improved of Luna
and Longhorn is a name of a place in Vancouver B.C., north of Redmond Seattle.
just my thoughts... no offense intended towards anybody.

I don't like Windows much and I call it and MS the 65 percent solution, but Windows works and with the Luna interface, it looks better that it previously did too. If you had a look at Windows 1.0 or 2.0, you'd probably agree with that.
Apple's Aqua isn't the end-all-be-all either. There's a lot to be loved but just as much to be hated, sometimes at the same time. e.g., I love watching the liquid effects, but I hate what they do as far as sucking up CPU cycles.
It's easy to dismiss something without in-depth experience. It's difficult to improve upon it. (Especially difficult when the source code isn't available.)

Windows lacks a certain amount of elegance and simplicity that Apple knows how to do so well, and these shots sure don't change my mind!
Looks like someones Desktop X theme!

i could make my PC look just as elegant and nice as a mac, and have all the cool effects. But then it would run just like a mac defeating the purpose of my purchase.
