Hi all,
If I were want to change the Mail.app icon, would be still be as simple as to change the icons via the Get Info window?
If the answer is YES, would the number* still be there?
*number as in number of new unread messages.
Asking because I don't wish to screw up my Mail app
Thanks!

Yes, as simple as using the "Get info" dialog.
The number will still be there.
You might need to log out for the changes to take affect though.
Cheque will be in the mail shortly.

That's not true... stop the check!
You also have to change the .icns file inside the application package.
The number will still be there though.
If you only change the icon with the get info box the icon will change back when you get an email.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

That's not my experience. I changed my Mail icon using copy and paste with the Get Info box and it worked fine.

mrtew is right. This is because mail.app uses the .icns file inside of the appe to put the number on the image. Therefor it will show the old icon when it puts the new mail thingy on it.

I've now got a spiffy looking icon that someone created in one of the Mail icon threads.
Cheers

Either modify it with iconographer (free tryout from versiontracker) or just replace theh icns file with another one you've downloaded and renamed.

Yup you have to change the icns. Using the copy paste method is fine, but once you get mail (with those little circles), Mail will revert to the old icon.
Right click on Mail.app, show package contents, and find the icns

Hmmm....Cut and Pasted it and it worked fine.
I just dragged the mail app to my desktop and then after I cut/paste the new icon, just dragged it back and everything works fine.
Even when I get a new Mail it stays at the new icon.

That's what happens for me as well. I replaced the Mail icon with one from MixThePix and after I cut and pasted, it works fine. The number of unread messages get added to the icon like it always did.

Hmm....I could have sworn it didn't work for me that way before. But copy/paste works fine now.

Maybe they somehow changed Mail to make custome themer people's lives easier. That would almost be a first for Apple!
