as my sig says, I'm recent switcher to Mac OS X from a PC.

I'd like to know how to make my own custon icons.. I need to know stuff like what formats I can design an icon to use. is there certain software recommended for making icon files... can you design a vector based graphic in PDF format and create an icon that way -- which I assume would allow for seamless scaling of the icon...

this is probably an easy thing to do, but again, I'm new at this.

The cheapest app is Iconographer, it's a very decent app for the price and it has a good manual... ( a lot of pro's use this app )
Iconographer is a fully-featured icon editor. It allows you to both change the icons of items and to edit the icon resources used by various programs. Iconographer has been created from the ground up to deal with many icon formats, inc luding: classic Mac OS (8-bit icons only), Mac OS 8.5+ (32-bit icons with 8-bit icons), Mac OS X (128 x 128 icons in .icns files), Windows and Windows XP (.ico files), and Mac OS X Server (48 x 48 icons in .tiff files).

Due to its flexibility, Iconographer is useful to both beginners and advanced users. It can be used for a wide range of tasks, ranging from simply creating some customized folder icons to editing complex resource files for an applicati on to converting icons between platforms.

Iconographer is a shareware product, if you use it to create more than a few icons a $15 payment is requested.
You should also check out CanCombineIcons, very nice app for combining icons and converting graphic files ( PSD, gif, jpeg, tiff, ...) to icons and vice versa...

Finally download IconBuilder Pro it's a Photoshop Plug-in and it has a pretty decent manual on how to make icons for Mac OSX, I prefer this app for making icons but it's pretty expensive...
