I installed Mighty Mouse to see if I would like the dropped shadow cursor. Since this is the only modification I use, I was wondering how I would add it to my system on a more permenant bases. So I wont have to depend on 3rd party apps just for one slight cursor modification.

I know it can be done, so what's the deal?

Admittedly, I'm biased towards Mighty Mouse, but I honestly don't think it can be done. The cursor is hard-coded into the OS and needs to be changed in software - Mighty Mouse.

You can change the spinning beachball by patching system executables on disk, but this is a really bad idea unless you are extremely comfortable with the command line or don't mind reinstalling your OS often.

Sigh. I long for the days of Beachball and Blobber. May they live in unsuported peace.

Someone did it once didn't they? I think I remember it happening. Why would changing that make you have to install the OS often?

The DXB theme changes your cursor dramatically. It's not the one you want, but it can be done without any application running. I much prefer my supercool cursor that I use with mighty mouse to a 'normal' dropshadow cursor.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

The dropshadow cursor with Beachball never looked authentic, it kinda squashed the arrow and the shadow looked weird.. since it was limited to the original size. I love how it looks with Mightymouse though (especcially since you don't need to register to do it ).

That's right. The shadow had to be cropped and it would only work in thousands of colors. So, just go with Might Mouse. It's a pretty inexpensive shareware and it works great for me.

Just out of curiosity, do MightyMouse cursors still flicker when dragging?

It is quite, umm, possible to change the cursor permanently. I have the instructions on how to do it somewhere and the shadowed cursor (and the aqua beachball). So long as you don't botch it up there would be no need to reinstall. I did it without the command line.

hmmm...
i've never seen any flickering.
i'm currently using mike's cursors, a nearly-perfect set.

best basic cursor by a long shot!

mighty mouse is worth it for that alone...

Beachball actually does (er, did) exactly what you're talking about... it patches the executable as Smeger said, and if you really felt like it you could then delete Beachball completely and your custom cursor would stay. The problems, of course, are that you're limited to the cursor size provided by Apple, and that you'll need to make a cursor that will work with 10.2.6... which I'm not even sure is possible, and might very well break your cursor when 10.2.7 comes along.
And by the way, I actually thought the shadowed cursor I made looked pretty darn spiffy, considering the limitations... and I used it quite successfully under millions of colors on my old G4 450 for quite some time, so I'm not sure what the thousands of color thing is about...

Here's another vote for Mighty Mouse (and all the Unsanity products - I actually registered Mighty Mouse, WindowshadeX and FruitMenu, the first shareware I've bought in years and I registered them on the same day I tried them )
