I am not much of a friend of Aqua, drop shadows or pseudo-3D. Are there any good flat themes? I am using WatercolorX these days, but it lacks little contrast, esp around scroll bars.
Any good theme recommendations? Or if anyone's looking for a theme idea, how about something like Ableton Live's UI?

Stink different.

I'm inclined to think that flat themes look a little out of place in OSX because of the dropshadows and animated effects... not to mention the fact that just about every icon going is done in pseudo-Aqua 3D style. Having sad that, I'd love to see a talented Flash-style designer take a stab at it.

I think lots of theme creation/development has been put on pause at the moment to see what shakes out from the Panther upgrade.

Agreed. I have a new theme ready to go, but I want to see what happens with 10.3. Since I will be upgrading, I want to see how much work is going to be involved and if it's even going to be possible with some of the finder changes. Maybe as more developer releases happen, we'll see Apple clean up the resources a bit. Then again, knowing Apple, I'm probably just dreaming.

Not if it's ready to go - but if when faced with putting all that work into something just to see it become an antique a month or two after it's done, you can't blame those who'd rather wait and see.

bbx,
i think if anything this panther 'threat' should allow you to put perfectionism on hold and release your new theme for jaguar, or am i dreaming?
i'm just at the point where it's turning into 'the boy who cried theme' for a few theme developers that have been promising themes.
not to be disrespectful -- i mean you have no responsibilities or anything -- but at some point you have to let your baby go into the world and live, even if it's not perfect. look at Max.. he updates and revises.

i believe when people say they have a theme that's ready to go...they really mean it's almost ready to go, but may be unreleaseable because it still has place holders of the template they are using...they've just got tired of the dang thing and tossed it aside for the time-being and with panther around the corner they're not very enthusiastic to pick up where they left off...
there are enough themes out there now for peeps to find a comfortable one to use or mod for for themselves...
by the way...i have a theme that's ready to go...

A month or two? It'll rather be half a year until 10.3 is ready for public consumption...

You're dreaming - I put my perfectionism on hold for no man (or woman as the case may be). I haven't stopped working on it, because even if it doesn't see the light in its present form for Jaguar or Panther, I'll put it out on XP as it was designed to look for OSX.
i'm just at the point where it's turning into 'the boy who cried theme' for a few theme developers that have been promising themes.
I don't recall making any promises - I've participated in discussions about theming and have spoken about the themes I have in progress, but that's all. There are no deadlines looming or paying customers to satisfy as far as I can tell. I'm as eager to get it out of my system as anybody is to use it, trust me.

Max and I are very different people with different ways of doing things... I've been at this for a long time and always do these things the same way - release it when I'm either sick to death of it or 100% happy with it, neither of these things has happened yet It'll be far from perfect in any case - too many compromises with OSX. I intend to have to tweak it and address user concerns once it's out... just not there yet. This new infant is killing much of my free time these days.

Yup - but reread what I said - if it's ready to go, release it... but if it's a ways away from being finished, that might be a different story.

Exactly. It's all designed out. And some elements have been created, but I'm sure as hell not going to put a ton of effort into it, only to have the theme be outdated a few weeks later. And then not knowing if I can even make the theme work in Panther.

So basically the Panther Pre-release has developers creating new versions of their software and taking advantage of new features...
...while theming gets stuck in the dark ages for FIVE TO SIX MONTHS?

When people say Apple doesn't support themes... that's what they mean. Why should it matter to them?

Yeah, big difference though... legitimate developers can be pretty confident their applications will work in Panther - we ourselves don't really have similar assurances at this point, do we?

well
if this is going to be the way it's going to be then i'd request all theme developers that will not be releasing anything in the next 6 months to also not talk about their up and coming unreleased themes.
it's the GUI customization version of c*ckteasing.
this is all meant with the utmost respect to bbx et all... but i'm just kinda tired of hearing about things.

yea, this is stupid. ohnos its a dev preview lets not make themes for jaguar because theres a dev preview of panther and theming looks harder. its a freaking developers preview. do you not think it just might happen to change? dumbest things ever. hell, if you dont want to start making it because it will become an "antique" in a month give it to someone else. its not like once panther comes out everyone is automatically going to upgrade in a matter of seconds. and anyway, we have word that panther wont be coming out until atleast the end of the year so this "in a couple of weeks" bullshît is well, bullshît. you guys disappoint me. wanting to keep theming going in mac os x but give up so easily.

perhaps some people would rather have their new theme completely finished before announcing it...

<rant>Well I'm sorry, but it's my time involved, not yours. I'm only going to support my next theme on Panther (if it'll work in Panther). So I'm not going to put double the amount of time into it. I'm married, buying a house, and running my own business. You tell me when it's going to get done? And I can't just "hand it off" to someone because part of themeing is designing it on the fly.</rant>

Then all I can suggest is that you not listen. If we want to use this forum to discuss theme or GUI related issues, we will. If in these discussions we reference themes in progress, oh well. If somebody asks questions regarding themes in progress, we remain free to answer them. If the people who are actually putting the effort into creating these things would rather hold off until they know what's going on with Panther, that's their business.
You may be 'tired' of hearing discussions between themers who have the audacity to take their own sweet time to create these things (for free in the spare time they may rarely find in their busy lives), or the nerve to continue to discuss the impact a major upcoming system release might have on their efforts - going so far as to openly consider if they shouldn't put their pet projects on hold (after all what's a few hundred wasted hours, right?)... I guess it sucks to be you.
The very purpose of this forum is (amongst other things) to discuss issues of this nature, and nobody (especially those actually pushing the pixels for our collective enjoyment) should have to censor themselves lest they risk inadvertantly teasing via reference to works in progress or offend the sensibilities of an unreasonable minority. No offense.

like i said before -- i did not intend to be disrespectful. i think you have no obligation to any of us, and i believe that any talented individual's time is valuable. I know you're spending valuable time on these themes, time you could be spending on things that a lot more selfish.
I'm only frustrated with the type of message that's like "Theme X is going to be great... it'll look like --something-- or just like this and that OS or just like this metal.."... Sort of like what happened with your upcoming theme, bbx. "It's going to be awesome, i've re-started on it several times, it should be done soon." is something that you've said a few times already. "It'll be great, and shortly after that, there'll be a plasticcy version..."
And yes, I understand that having a child now takes away from your free time. Totally understood. Christ, if I had one I doubt i'd spend the insane amount of time I spend online anymore.. =)
I just see no point to spending no time theming for the next 6 months. People clearly have a lot of the work done, and a release could maybe be done in the next month... leaving 5 months for the theme to be worshipped and cherished.
In 5 months, we might all be wearing silver hats and driving flying cars. Panther might have switched theme formats 5 times, each time for a mood swing of mr Jobs.
Does Panther really justify postponing themes for 5 months? I don't think so. that's all i'm saying.
Any other reason, most of all anything personal life, on the other hand, sounds a lot more valid to me.
