anyway to "lock" the dock?
so, for example, it will only come out of hiding with a key combo?

i like using the app switcher, and i'd like the screen real estate where the dock resides.

any ideas/shareware apps??

I'm also interested in this. I'd love to be able to have only Command Option D bring it back. Sometimes I hide it to make room for windows in After Effects, but it keeps thinking I'm trying to bring it back when I'm just trying to work, and when I do want it back it hesitates.

What I do is move the Dock.app out of the Coreservices into the Applications folder and launch it from there. You can use Force Quit to quit it and LaunchBar to launch it again.

Hmm or you could move it to part of the screen you wouldn't activate it by accident and just hide it? I don't know... why would you need to "lock" it? I use FruitMenu for my launcher, so I've got nothing in my dock and I've got it as small as it gets and in the corner.

would be nice to have apps using the fullscreen sometimes, without having to worry about the dock popping up.

maybe i should crazy glue it to the screen edge...

You can also set permissions to unreadable if you want, to kill it.

There's killdock 1.0

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10978

But be warned, if you totally disable your dock, you will not be able to have a desktop background. The desktop background is actually a part of the dock.

the idea is to lock it, so it will only appear with a key combo (for example)

oh well...

What do you use the dock for mainly? If just an app switcher, you could try a more customizable alternative like Dragthing (maybe, i dont use it). I use ASM to make the dock autohide for certain apps (eg. photoshop or illustrator). I know it isnt what you requested, but i hope it helps.

Use Tinkertool and place the dock at the top of the screen. You'll rarely addicentally show it, without using apple-option-D.

U know, I had the same problem. I use pro Tools and U're always clicking on the left, right and bottom of the window so wherever I put the dock, it would pop up and annoy the hell out of me. So my solution was to make it as small as can be made.. It's tiny, I almost don't see it but it never bothers me anymore.. then this computer is only used for Pro Tools so I never have to launch anything else... ;-)

But U can try that too.

would be great if apple (or a third-party, hint hint), offered the option to lock (and unlock) the dock with a key combo

would be nice to have the full screen when u want (especially us powerbook users)
