which apps to skin?

I've been plowing through app skins in ThemePark, and it's really becoming a chore. Of course I like theming, otherwise I wouldn't do it, but importing almost identical elements over and over and over again can get pretty boring/tedious/suicide inducing.

Of course it used to be that you could get away with app skins for just Safari and iChat... anything else (including iTunes) was a pleasant surprise simply because it required doing manual applying work. Now that everything is done through ShapeShifter, there's really no excuse not to skin every app possible other than how tedious it is.

So, here's my question (at last) to you fine people... which apps can be safely ignored? Obviously more is better, but which do you never use/couldn't care less about? Which apps would you go crazy and kill someone if the theme didn't have a skin for it?

Here's the list of apps that can be skinned in the current version of ShapeShifter, and have a significant amount of changes that can be done to them. Of these, I'm strongly considering saying "screw you" to iMovie and Toast.

- Address Book
- Camino
- iCal (a ton of stuff to edit, but still fairly restricted)
- iChat
- iMovie (see iCal)
- iPhoto (see iCal)
- iTunes (see iCal)
- Mail
- QuickTime (see iCal)
- Safari
- Toast 6 Titanium (an entirely unique beast that eats small themers and other generally friendly omnivores)
- VLC

The following are apps that can be skinned, and the number of editable elements or elements that SHOULD be edited are so small that there's no excuse not to do them.

- Calculator (arguably doesn't require any theming at all in most themes)
- Font Book
- Help Viewer
- Installer
- iSync
- Preview
- Sherlock

I'm quit happy with just iChat and Safari being skinned. Why? well skinning iTunes is a nice idea but its not something I look at all the time usually its hidden.

Safari...but as a Safaricon skin. I hate having to be forced to use a skin

The main reason I switched from camino to safari was because all the themes were for safari... It'd be nice if I could go back.

I agree with bv. Those are pretty much the only things I look at daily (well not iChat, but itd be nice). Safari is good enough for me but I can understand why some people want Camino. Does this mean that the new Latium is on the way?

Of course . It could have been released on that day-of-all-releases (yeah, SS 1.2), but I wasn't happy with it yet... and actually still am not. My guess is another week or so, with a few days tacked on if I do a simultaneous release of a greyscale version... still debating on whether or not blue is worthwhile.

Back on topic though, thanks for the input you guys. It looks like people couldn't care less about QuickTime, iCal, iPhoto, and iMovie... which is great because all of those apps can be a real pain in the ass. Ordinarily "I'm lazy and don't want to do them" wouldn't be a good enough excuse, but with a large number of variants, and each one having its own app skins (unfortunately they can't be shared even if they are identical), file size can get pretty huge in a hurry.

Next big question: For Camino, would you like to see customized toolbar buttons (back/forward/stop/etc) like in Safari? I know quite a bit of people use their own toolbar skins (or ones they've downloaded), many more than people who use Safari, and I'm wondering if toolbar buttons would largely be ignored.

I'd say stick to the Apple apps for now. Specifically, the ones that mostly use the system resources for appearance but have a few of their own. For example, iPhoto and iChat both inherit my themes from ShapeShifter, but have some buttons of their own that look like ass when used with a non-metal theme.

Toast, and any other apps that do a total custom interface (Quicktime player, etc), I say can be left to do later. And as far as Camino, I thought it already used the standard appearance, and just had custom buttons.....

Someone said something about not wanting a cretain app skinned by default- remember, SS has an exclude app feature.

Looking forward to Latium 2, and I think a blue varient would be great, but that's because it is my favorite color.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.
