I thought I'd seriously work my way through and figure out everything about these backgrounds that really are buggin' me. So I applied [fear] platinum (and got amazed once again) and checked all the apps I could for where the 8x8 px bg is used.

Couldn't find a single one, the whole 128x128 px pattern shows up fine in everything app, cocoa and carbon alike (with the exception of the theme preview app).

Kind of makes you wonder...does this problem still exist?

The ShapeShifter 1.2 release notes state, among other things:

• Cocoa applications no longer clip patterns to an 8x8 pixel square. This makes themes like Brushed look better in Cocoa.

So I think the problem is no longer there
