It won't actually be transparent if you set it to be, it just gets a little ugly. The space for the menu bar is drawn by the SystemUIServer, the images are just drawn over it.

Does anyone know where this "Barmaid" APE can be downloaded? It seems very elusive to me. I have tried Versiontracker, MacUpdate and Googled it. Maybe someone could eMail it to me? Thanks.

Great, thanks for the heads up. I installed it, but it disables Backlight which is much more important to me. It is still in alpha though, judging by the version number.
