Have you tried logging in as root user and changing it there?

To change the system preferences you have to make your new icon a .icns and then open up the package contents. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP THE ORIGINAL .ICNS BEFORE YOU REPLACE IT. You will want to replace PrefApp.icns and make sure your new icon has that same name. After doing this just go to "Get Info" and highlight the icon and hit "delete" and it should be changed. Hope this helps.

You don't need to do anything scary to customize the system prefs icon. Here's all you need to do:

1) Locate the original utility in your Apps folder
2) Get info on the app
3) Change the ownership & permissions pull down to Read & Write
5) Change the "Owner" under details from System to your username. (you may need to unlock this option by clicking the small lock icon)
6) Close the get info inspector
7) Customize the application icon using the standard copy and paste method.
8) Drag a new copy of the app into your dock.

That should be it. Enjoy!

kickash .. it works like a charm for system prefs. i have another problem.

i have a program called temperature monitor .. it shows a really old temp monitor and oral temperature taker thing .. (well no need to describe, it's an ugly icon) and i changed it to something else. it changes just fine but when i open the program, it bounces in the dock then the picture changes back to it's original icon. it wont show the one i chose until i reboot the 'book. any idea how to keep it permanant?

1) how to permanantly change an icon if it reverts back to it's original icon upon activating.

thanks for your help =)
