It would be cool if at the login screen one could click a series of check boxes to open programs, connect to internet (dial-up), and other tasks that would happen as soon as you login. This could be set either as a permanent or a per login basis.

Example:
I click my icon to login to my account.
Then I get to choose which programs I want to open, or whether or not I want to go online.
Then I fill in my password and click the login button.

I have some ideas as how to set up the preferences, but I thought that this was a little obvious.

Why at the login screen? You can already choose applications to run when you log-in (in System Preferences). If you want something else to happen, just write an AppleScript and add it to your login items.

well, maybe the log in screen would need a redo to fit those new functions, so could be right here at GUI -just kidding-

Ha ha ha, very funny. Yeah, some of us college peoples still use dial-up.
I know that you can put stuff in the startup items in the System Prefs, but this assumes that I would want the same stuff to happen every time I login.
I think that it would be useful to have the ability to sit down, choose what I want to open, login and let it all start up. I know this isn't much different from just logging in and opening the apps from the doc.
But, if you have a specific routine that you find yourself doing everyday?

As for GUI, this is specifically a GUI thing. Just because it doesn't have to do with making your OS look different, it does indeed have to do with the function. So there,

And a little flame. For Pete's sake people! It's just an idea! Not the end of the world. Since when was it illegal to post ideas?

you could... let's see... write a quick applescript (put it in the login items) that let's you pick... or a full cocoa app if you want... you could even have a pref file that it will read from and make checkboxes for each one.

concievably, the idea would be to be able to select which login items should be opened. the reason not to just "click them when you login" would be something to do with the fact that... let's see... if I leave aDock running all the time, I don't want a dock icon, (it's always running), and if it's a login item it's probably something like that.

Yeah, your best bet would be to make an applescript or something else with a little dialog box/gui that you'd put in your 'login items' and would run right after you logged in.

Why not have multiple logins...
set up a login for each of the different work modes you might be in.
for example one login might be called 'Themeing', in which case it has photoshop, and themepark etc, in the library/startup items. It could even have the url of MacNN Forums in there.
