I just noticed today that my icon for "CDs & DVDs" in system preferences has just plain disappeared. The text label is still there and I can click in the area where the icon is supposed to be and it works fine. Has anyone else had this problem? I turned off all my mods like shapeshifter, APE, etc. and its still broken. Anyhow know how to get it back?

It's always APE that gets blamed first... poor APE...

Repair your permissions and run a disk check from the Panther install CD Disk Utility, and hope that fixes something.

I've had some of the sys prefs do that to me too before, and once the APE manager icon was all corrupted and needed to be reinstalled... never caused any problems though. I really highly doubt it has anything to do with anything like APE that you've got installed.

you know right after i posted, I started thinking about what programs I ran in the last week... I ran diskwarrior about a week ago or so. I bet thats what did it. Anyhow i'm gonna repair the permissions and see if that does it.

well i repaired the permissions, it did fix several things, however I rebooted and the icon is *still* missing! ugh!! Anyone out there have any ideas?

I think System Preferences stores it in a cache somewhere. Try deleting this file:
/Users/<yourname>/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
