I'm looking for advice on creating a plastic look and a metal look on small objects like the menu bar fill. I've found lots of tutorials online but there all for text and dont translate to smaller images very well. For the plastic look im after something thats shiny and reflective and the metal im trna find a chrome effect if possible.

Chrome is easy enough to do with a gradient, just have hi-contrast in your colors something almost black and something white or almost white, you can stick a few more colors in if you want like a sky blue to make it look like the sky is reflecting in it or any other color that might be reflecting. You then make the blend between colors really sudden and sharp, it should be easy to eyeball if you know what chrome generally looks like. Hope that helps.

Also, I think it is standard to crate the items large, then scale them down.

Thats why all the toutorials are for large things.
