I have a couple of new themes in progress at the moment...
Seeing the Smoothicons, and Dace's Smootheme earlier, inspired me to build.
Here is a little peek at the result:

'Blu SmooosX'

...and I'm also playing with another deep blue theme...
here is the tiniest of peeks at it:

'Pukeko'
and yes, it is a theme. =)

I honestly hope those buttons are part of the titlebar and not actually that big... I can't stand it when the widgets are spaced differently between cocoa and carbon applications.

At the moment, one version of 'Blu SmooosX' does have buttons that big. =)

I like the concept of SmooosX, but the lighting coming from the corner instead of straight above kind of bugs me.

But I look forward to clicking your big widgets . Nifty trick.

They look great, i just think with the smoooxe theme u have to add more outline... define the shapes, cause that it was the smooth icon set is bout... but otherwise they look owesome (owesome = greater than awesome) keep up the good work

They are spaced equally... but you are right, they do move a bit at the moment.
I like the size of them, but I may trim them down a little... for example, they have a 2pxl dropshadow that may be trimmed eventually.

I have always had a tendency towards having my preferred lightsource on the upper left.
The early Mac GUI's have a lot to answer for.
A lightsource on the right has always felt wrong to me.

(I think also, because the western world and a lot of the rest of it read from left to right.
It seems right to me that the image should appear from the left... and the memory of it should linger off to the right.)

...
I realise that the OSX built in drop shadow goes straight down... but I'm still fighting it. LOL

Thanks...
I am treating the windows as if they are folder icons. Items in the window are being treated somewhat like the front page of the folder icon. The darker borders are used on selected items.

I will also be including the original osx white corrigated paper texture in places.
(if anyone could send me a small sample of the original pattern, it would be appreciated)
=)

I can understand why you prefer 120° lighting but it's so out of style now, really. No matter how good a theme is, I would never use it if the global lighting is 120°.

By your logic, 90° actually does make more sense because we read from top to bottom more than from left to right. You don't move the object horizontally while reading. You only move the object vertically hence the scrollbar. Our memory of it is that it ends at bottom, not right.

When I switched from OS 9 to OS X, my opinion was 100% exactly same as yours... I've had a very difficult time getting used to 90° but later I found it is the right way to go. I guess it'll break in for you soon too

The 'Pukeko' theme may look a bit quirky, with its little animated eyes...

but there will also be a more serious version, because (although you can't see it here) this theme has a beautiful dark glowing iridescence.

While it looked great, it stills have some way to go before becoming a true Smoothicons Theme (official or not). Here's my opinion of why it didn't work well:
  • Light cast should be sharp and defined like the top-left corner on Smoothicons folder icon
  • Heavy Bevel uses is a big no-no. It totally threw the whole illustration feeling away
  • Lighting should be very subtle. As Smoothicons icon set show that, lighting plays a very small role in overall look
  • Dark areas should be dark blue instead of black with low opacity (see bottom-right of folder icon)
  • Not staying true to the folder's color palette
  • Where's the stripes!?!

I agree... It isn't a true Smoothicons Theme, It is simply inspired by (and compatible with) the icon set.
It does have many of the features of it though...
The window (although not quite a square corner) does have a sharp drawn highlight, but it is mostly hidden by the first widget.

That's true...
The bevel button was originally going to emulate that of the pen shown in that particular icon. When seeing all those buttons together, it does totally skew the effect.
I will also accept that I over-did the bevels... I just liked them. =)

hmmm... I was trying to see what you were getting at here.
I guess you are refering to the fact that there are no cast shadows in the icons.
• Dark areas should be dark blue instead of black with low opacity (see bottom-right of folder icon)
The only black used, is outside the window frame.
The front 'page' of the folder icon has a blue outline around half of it. The other half is outlined by the external black. (that's the way that I interpreted it.) At first I tried outlining the buttons with blue... then black, then a gradient from blue to black, finally deciding on blue to dark blue.
• Not staying true to the folder's color palette
I still seem to be fighting with Photoshop here... the aim was to keep the same palette. But the finder buttons seem to have shifted slightly toward the violet.
• Where's the stripes!?!
The stripes are there... just not in that section shown. =)
I am glad you have pointed that out though. I may try a version with the stripes showing in the titlebar. Does anyone have an example of that original stipe texture?

I will attempt a closer version... though what works for the angled icon may not work as well for the square windows
