That doesn't require a theme manager to use it.

Meaning the Extras.rsrc can be manually installed.

I recently got an itch to have a bit darker theme.

Thanks.

Well crap.

I guess I will make my own.

If anyone else is interested.....

Some themes don't NEED theme changers. There should be an option.

I have a real low understanding of ThemePark...
Isn't this fairly easy to Export an Extras.rsrc from TP?

Would the effort of creating one be worth the time and trouble and experimenting rather than using a theme changer? What about quality control?

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I've created themes before. So there would be no experimenting.

I don't like theme changers.. and what do you mean quality control?

Theme changers make it much easier though, you have to agree. And if everyone uses one type of theme changer, then only supplying one format is the norm, and easier on the themer as well. You have to have already figured this out though, so I don't see what the big deal is.

#1 I usually only use one theme.

#2 I can manually install that theme.

#3 I don't want any theme changers running in my system

#4 Since Extras.rsrc is the format themes are originally in. This wouldn't be supporting another format because OS X already does.

It's really no big deal. If the authors of said themes don't want to offer an Extras.rsrc, I will just make my own.

I just thought maybe swiz had a Extras of his cool theme laying about.

No big deal.

Except if they make it available like you say and someone screws up their system well they will be hounded. the beauty of SS is that it doesn't mess with Extras.rsrc, it leaves the system stuff untouched. If you want to do that yourself then go for it, but with the SS being so powerful and cheap I doubt that there will be much of an audience willing to muck around with the files.

Screw up your system?

I don't believe in the boogy man either.

I've been swiping the Extras.rsrc for years (Even before the Public Beta days) and it has caused me no harm.

People have screwed up their systems using theme changers as well. I read the threads about it in here all the time.

The common denominator here is ignorance. Neither way is dangerous.

And I don't care about an audience. I am just doing this for myself.

If anyone else wants it and doesn't want to use a theme changer, I am sure I wouldn't have any problem giving it out though.

Edit: NM... move along... nothing to see here.

Edit: I guess I'll go ahead and repost my post. Any theme changer, whether patch (APE) based or file based will mess with your Extras.rsrc. It just depends on how you define it. The way patch based theme changers work (like ShapeShifter) is they track all file opens on your system. If your system tries to open a file that ShapeShifter wants to theme, like your Extras.rsrc, ShapeShifter will go grab a copy of the themed Extras.rsrc that it generates when you hit the apply button and force the program to use that instead of the one in the default system location. This is where the iTunes conflicts come from. If you change themes when you're say.. running iTunes 4, ShapeShifter generates an iTunes 4 resource file. Then if you update to iTunes 4.5, ShapeShifter will force iTunes 4.5 to load from a iTunes 4 resource file. Instant crashage. However, reapplying the theme gets ShapeShifter to generate a new resource file.

Because of this, it is perfectly possible for ShapeShifter to break your system, if it did generate a bad resource file, or if it applied a resource file that was incompatible with your system. ShapeShifter is safer in the way that it doesn't copy files into your system, making it easier to get back to Aqua, but it is still certainly substituting files in your system, just on a higher level.

You can see all the files that ShapeShifter is redirecting open commands to in ~/Library/Caches/ShapeShifter

I agree with Zim. I miss the days when I could bypass a changer that actually screwed my system up more than I ever did myself (Read: Changer screwed it up a few times. I never screwed myself up. Take that. This was BEFORE SS though.). Then SS comes along and all of a sudden Themes are self-contained and require you to run a high overhead RAM gobbling Preference Pane. (No offence to Unsanity whom I love BTW ad defend to the bitter end when one of "those Threads" shows up. I just wish I could do it all manually like the good days. I even had the Terminal commands in scraps so I didn't have to type and I NEVER killed my OS when using my own method.

I guess the real Plus to having a changer is it automates changing everything. If I was just changing the Extras, it'd be fine. But really, I think I can live with SS if it means I can customize everything at once.

So I'm basically more for SS. And with my 1.42GHz Mini, I guess I won't notice a slowdown, so I'm okay with it. I just need to find a Theme that I actually want to keep.
