i've been having major issues changing the icon for my applications folder - not the icon for the actual folder (which has been no trouble at all), but the one that's in the little window on the left hand side of the finder (sorry, i forget what that's called, but the one that shortcuts you to a folder or drive).
i have changed the folder icon and when i go to 'Macintosh HD' i can see the apps folder with the correct icon, but the old, default icon is still in the folder shortcuts bar off to the left. sometimes when i click on the shortcut it flashes up the correct icon but then goes immediately back to the default. this is a little strange, but i've been trying to change it for a while and sometimes, for no reason i can figure out, it does actaully change, and the shortcut folder icon will be the right one. or the one i changed it to last week, and have changed again since. what the?
i hope you can follow what i'm on about here. it's driving me nuts trying to work out what's going on, so any help people can offer would be most appreciated!
sminch (the confused newbie)
edited to add that all my other folders and drives have the right icon in that shortcut bar, and the right icon is showing up beside the Applications header on the folder window when i'm in the apps folder. aaargh.

You're probably referring to what's known as the sidebar or toolbar.
There's a prefs file in your user library that you might want to try and trash, perhaps empyt caches, zap the PRAM - the usual.

If those ideas don't work, try this:
Open up the Finder Preferences: Click on the Sidebar tab: UNcheck the Applications checkbox. Close the preferences window. Now open a Finder window and manually drag the Applications folder to the Sidebar. This should do it. I hope.
Good luck.

cheers for the ideas gerrit and crooner, but it's still not working...
here's a shot of what i'm seeing - the info box is actually from the sidebar's Applications folder, so even though the icon in the sidebar is one thing, its own info says it's another.

one interesting thing is that the sidebar icon did change when i deleted the prefs file in the user library, but it didn't change to the icon i wanted it to.
if there any other ideas out there i'd love to hear about them - if nothing else i'm learning more about how os x works and how to troubleshoot, which is all good. thanks people!

Crooner's idea should work, or you could drag the Applications folder out of the sidebar (like the dock) and drag the actual folder in.

yeah, crooner's idea really sounds like it should work, so i just tried again but still have no luck. i also tried removing the folder from the sidebar and then deleting my prefs, restarting, and dragging the folder back into the now-default sidebar. same result - old icon.
this is beginning to get a little weird...

Okay... I think I might have it...
Are you using CandyBar to replace your icons? If so, you'll have to make sure that whatever icon you’re using for the Applications folder is the same one you drop into the Applications icon well in the General Icons section. Reload the icons and this *should* do it. Let's hope...

hi again crooner,
good idea but no, unfortunately i've never had candybar on this machine and i'm not using any other gui tools - i tried out shapeshifter for a few days to see how that went, but the apps folder icon issue was present before i installed ss, and is still there after i uninstalled ss. part of the reason i wanted to try shapeshifter was to see if it'd change my apps folder icon.
trying to think about what could be going on, is there somewhere other than a folder's info sheet where you can change its icon? i was reading a page that talked about changing stubborn icons and i was going to try that, but it was only re: icons on apps, not folders. does anyone have a more circuitous route to change icons?
is there a master list that is updated when you change paste a new icon into the info sheet? i assume that there must be... any takers on this idea?
