for the trash can you need to do the following steps. for the "my computer... I don't know.

trash on desktop:
1. in the finder press "command+shift+g" or choose "go to folder" from the "go" menu.
2. in the dialog box type "~/.trash" and press "go" ("~" means "the current users home folder", so "~/.trash" is the same as "/users/username/.trash")
3. while you are in the ".trash" folder press "command+t" or choose "add to side bar" from the "file" menu
4. once you have ".trash" in the sidebar you can close that window and go back to the desktop.
5. on the desktop press "command+shift+n" or choose "New folder" from the "file" manu to make a new folder.
6. don't worry about renaming it yet. select that folder and press "command+L" or choose "make alias" from the "file" menu to make an alias of the "untitled folder"
7. delete the original"untitled folder" (not the alias)
8. highlight the "untitled folder alias" and press "command+i" or choose "get info" from the "file" menu
9. click "select new original" in the "get info" window
10. click ".trash" in the sidebar of the "select new original" window
11. click "choose". close "get info". rename the alias to "trash" (or whatever you want)
12 change the icon... more instructions on this if you ask.

I can't take ALL the credit... www.macosxhints.com helped a lot. I had figured this out by myself once before, but I couldn't remember how i did it, so I checked MacOSXHints. its a great resource for minor hacks like this.
