I changed the icon for my startup drive a few months ago, by pasting into the 'Get Info' window. I tried to change it to something else but pasting it again didn't change anything. I cut the old icon out and it went back to the default, but now it's stuck there. Permissions seem to be fine, where does the finder store the info for that?

I donīt know if I got your question, but the Icon for the drives are saved in their roots in an invisible File calles ".VolumeIcon.icns".

Awesome. That's just what I needed. The ownership/permissions on that file (.VolumeIcon.icns) were incorrect. I changed them and all is better.
