Hey everyone, I figured out how to put RIMShots Docuniumº Office Icons to better use! I think this is something that a lot of people might have been wondering how to do. I know I have. This is a DIY for how to replace almost any icon in the office apps. I personally only replaced the .doc, .xls, and .ptt file icons. (since those are the files that were included in Docuniumº)

How to replace icons in Microsoft Word 2004 - DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK

Before trying this, you should probably back up your copies of the original Office apps by copying them and putting them in a folder somewhere else on your harddrive. Just in case.

1. First you'll need to download ResFool. Search "ResFool" in Google and you'll find it. It does cost $19.95, but you can use it without paying. Pixadex might make things easier (soft of) But you DO NOT need it to do this. Another thing you may need is HexEdit. You will be working with Hex Data, but I think ResFool has a built in Hex Editor, but I might be wrong.

2. Find the icon you want to use to replace the existing .doc icons with and copy it (select it and then press Command C) This is where Pixadex comes in handy since you'll have easier access to the icons you might want to use. But like I said, you dont have to have Pixadex to do this mod.

2. Run ResFool. When you first run ResFool it should automatically open a blank resource file named "untitled." just leave it, and dont close it since you'll need it later. If it didnt, or if you closed it just open a new resource file (command N)

3. Paste (command V) the icon into the blank resource file in ResFool. It should appear in Italics and say "icns(1)". Double click on the folder name "icns(1)"

4. You should now be in a new window and see a preview of the icon. Double Click on the icon and it will open a Hex File

5. Select all (Command A) and copy the data (command C). Close this window. Close the "'icns' for Untitled 1" window as well (just to free up clutter from the desktop.

3. Now its time to open up Word in ResFool. while in ResFool, go to File>Open>[Select the app you want to open. In this case we're using Microsoft Word]

4. You should now be in the "Microsoft Word" resource file. Look for the folder named "icns (28)" If you're having difficulty finding it, click the "size" tab twice to arrange in descending order. It should be the biggest folder, so it will appear first. Double Click on the folder.

5. You should now be in a new window for 'icns'. You'll see the .doc file icon you want to replace. Its "ID" is 129.

6. Double click on the preview of this icon and it should open up a hex file just like it did earlier with the replacement icon.

7. Select all (command A) and PASTE (command V) the Hex Data that you originally copied from the icon you're using to replace the default icon. Close this Window. Close the "'icns' for Microsoft Word" window as well (again to free clutter from the desktop.)

8. Now close the "microsoft Word" Window. It will prompt you to save. Select SAVE.

8. Close the "untitled 1" window. It will prompt you to save as well. Select DO NOT SAVE. there's no point

9. Check your files. they should now have the new icons!

10. repeat for Powerpoint and Excel

I hope this works as smoothlyy for everyone else as it did for me. I've restarted and there's no problems with running word, excel or power point. I'm no computer expert, so you will really be doing this at your own risk. Again, hopefully it goes as well for everyone else as it did for me. Later

I'm not too sure how to post pics. Do I need to host them somewhere? I've got class now, so I'll try to figure it out later.

Has anyone tried this yet? I see there's been a lot of views, but no replies. Or did everyone already know how to do this?

Very nice writeup! But possibly easier is to open Microsoft Word using ThemePark, navigate to icns 129 and drag in the icon you want to use.
Geekspiff - generating spiffdiddlee software since before you began paying attention.
