this may be one of those asked every other day newbie questions, but...is iTunes not customizable? I feel like I've heard that around here, and I can't find any themes that have skins for it. If so, WHY!?!?!!? Why is iTunes the bastion of uneditableness? There must be a good explanation to be found.

uh...
resexcellence has some itunes skins, though i'm not sure if they are compatible with the current itunes.
i think the reason some themers may not skin itunes, is because they probably use konfabulator or maybe a menu bar controller. itunes would always be hidden, so that makes 1 less thing to theme for them, which makes the theme get released faster.

which is fine with me...whatever gets the themes out quick...
But if I were to want to change the way iTunes looks, is there someone out there who can point me to a place that will show me how to do it? It is a HUGE eyesore when using certain themes (namely Pulsar gold), and I would love to be able to change it.

iTunes is themeable, but it's harder than normal to theme and the result has many limitations. The basic reason is that:
a) It's a Carbon application and
b) It's one of the few remaining Carbon apps that's based on the PowerPlant framework and
c) It uses a lot of custom PowerPlant widgets and
d) Its widgets use separate images to store the picture and the transparency mask and
e) The window background hardcodes a gray gradient so it can only be lightened to a certain extent.
You can use ThemePark to theme it. Either create a new theme, or, if you're brave, edit the iTunes.rsrc file directly.
Good luck!
