Right click on the MacInstosh HD icon, select get info. if you have a one button mouse press control while holding the mouse pointer on the HD icon and select get info.
the reading will be there in the get info window that opens.
you can also use disk utility: applications >> utilities >> disc utility. open disc utility and select MacInstosh HD from the volumes and the info will be there. while upu have it open you may as well correct your permissions as well since you seem new to macs, you should do this about once a month or whenever installing softwarem secuirity updates or operating system updates.

Before you go to the view options, make sure you have the desktop selected, and not another folder or application. Checking Show Item Info should do it.

No special software required:
Within the Finder menu at top left, select 'View,' then 'Show View Options,' then select 'Show Items Info" button. You may then reposition the information to the right of the desktop icon by selecting the Label Position 'Right' button or leave in the default position by selection the 'Bottom' button.
Viola!

one question, could it be that this only shows the avaiable space if it's below a certain value?
I've got two HDs, and the first (2,7GB left) only shows the size of the disk in general, the other one(456 MB left) also the remaining space.

I don't think so, on my PB it always showed used and available space for the HDD no matter the sizes.
