Ok, all I want to do is change the background of the Spotlight search box that drops down from the menu bar.

I can't find it!

Please, someone help.

Note: I do not wnat to do this via a guiKit, I am not going to create an entire theme to change a single resource...

No problem here is the location /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/Resources/ The two files that you want to change are MDMenu_LeftPattern.tiff and MDMenu_RightPattern.tiff

By searchbox I assume you mean the blue part. 4lfclover's directions are correct except you want to change:
- MD0-0-Left-1.tiff
- MD0-0-Middle-1.tiff
- MD0-0-Right-1.tiff

As well as the graphite variants (same name, except 6 replacing the 1) if you're going to be using that. Be sure to back up an unaltered Search.bundle too.

Oh, for the record, that is the right bundle, but you both had the actual files wrong, the files for the search bar abckground are:

MDSearchWidget_Normal-1.tiff
MDSearchWidget_Normal-6.tiff
