I'm wondering what is the difference between activating and installing a font. I'm trying to get a handle on font management and I'm just not understanding that bit of it. Also, what exactly does deactivating do...remove the font completely?

I'd like to try font management without the help of apps like FAP or Font Reserve, but I'm wondering if it will be possible, since I use Photoshop a good bit and I notice that if I add a new font using Font Book while PS is open, I have to relaunch it to get it to acknowledge the new font. I'd like it to automatically see the font the next time I use the font menu. Will this require a program that has auto-activation?
