If the default icons are changed and you can't recover them, the closest replacement set I can think of is at http://www.railheaddesign.com/. You can then use Shapeshifter or Candybar to change them back, or change them all manually if you're really anal like me.
Otherwise, I can't think of anything else other than a reinstall. Perhaps others who are more experienced than me will have better suggestions?
