How can I remove icons from the dock?

I would like to get rid of icons for programs I never use, but can't figure out how. I have OS 10.3.9

Make sure the application is closed (Quit), then click on the icon and drag it out of the dock. You'll see it disappear from the dock in a poof of white smoke.

or control click (right click) on the icon and choose remove from dock

Thanks, guys. Control click did not work but dragging did. I could not find that in Help anywhere.
