For the record, I did do a search, and tried everything that was offered to no avail. I can't seem to change the icon of my hard drive. I've changed it before, but I went to change it today and it wouldn't change. I've tried: restarting, repairing permissions, and making sure I had read/write privileges to that drive.
I use the copy/paste in the Get Info box method. I've tried CandyBar, but my demo's expired and I don't use it enough to pay for it.
Any ideas? I'd be much obliged!

do u have a custom icon on it now?
if so, try cutting the current icon.
log out.
log in,
copy the icon you want, try to paste it.
also...
are you on a network?
try...disconnecting from the network if...
just some ideas...

Thanks for the ideas
The icon on it is a custom one, but I had screwed up with CandyBar a while back, so now it thinks it is the default icon.
Not connected to a network either
I tried repairing permissions again, just in case. Still no dice

The icon is stored on the root of the drive /Volumes/Macintosh HD (or whatever your drive is called) in a hidden file called .VolumeIcon.icns.
Make sure you have permission to this file.
If it's just your private computer, open the Terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal) when you're logged in as administrator. Paste "sudo chmod 777 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/.VolumeIcon.icns" (no quotes) into and hit return. Type your password, and hit enter again. If your hard drive is not called Macintosh HD, you'll have to enter what you have in that space.
This should allow you to paste the icon into the Get Info window.

Thanks for all the help. I ended up finding a solution that worked. I logged in as root, and that enabled me to change it. I'll have to try the previous suggestion so I won't have to go through that hassle again.

Just for the record, GSixZero, your tip fixed it for good. I can change it from my own username now. Thanks!
