How do I stop minimizing? When I double click on the menu bar of a window, the window disappears to the Dock. Also, if I press Command-M, that window disappears to the Dock.

How can I stop this annoying feature?

You can change the double-click behavior in System Preferences --> Appearance.

You can stop minimizing windows by not hitting Cmd-M, or by changing that command to mean something else in the System Preferences --> Keyboard & Mouse

I already unchecked "Minimize when double clicking a window title bar," but that didn't help. I couldn't find any settings in the Keyboard and Mouse panel.

I tried disabling Fruit Menus, and that didn't change the behavior. I also disabled Window Shade, but the windows still disappear to the Dock. I also disabled Application Enhancer (APE), but still no change.

I would like to be able to double-click on the title bar to reduce the window to only the title bar. I was able to do this earlier today, but something happend. There were a number of crashes last night and today.

I also used to be able to double click the Command key, and the window was reduced to only the title bar, nice feature, but that is gone too!

I don't know why you would call me a troll!!??!! I only have Apples and Macs in our home, at least a dozen that are still working! Apple IIgs (sitting right in front of me), SE/30, sitting right by my side, works perfectly, G4 iBook (I'm typing on right now), PowerMac 7300/500 (upgrade) in my bedroom (my oldest son was using earlier today to work on his website), and many more .....

I'd like to solve this problem with windows disappearing to the Dock. This is something that has only happened today, and is very annoying. I've been installing numerous applications, and I'm wondering if something I've installed has caused the trouble.

I could sure use some help to get my settings back to where they were recently, so I can double click on the title bar to reduce a window to only the title bar, and also hit the Command key twice to reduce a window to only the title bar, a feature that I use a lot, but now this feature is no longer working.

In fact, I'd really like to get rid of the Dock altogether!!! I tried the trick listed in the August issue of MacAddict, by placing my favorite applications into a folder, and then putting that folder into the Dock. Works ok, but I'd still rather get rid of the Dock completely!!!!

I'm afraid you're stuck in a classic Mac OS mindset, vjamac. You did do something that affected Window Shade, but I cannot tell you exactly what you did. Try reinstalling it perhaps. As for the Dock, it's an integral part of OS X. Without the Dock there is no Exposé and no Dashboard (in 10.4). You could choose to hide the Dock, but it's a better idea to get accustomed to it.

It sounds to me like you had installed WindowshadeX, one of whose main features is enabling a double click on the title bar to reduce the window to just the title bar.

You may have been using this as a trial, (its shareware, not freeware) and it has expired. You can either pay for it (its cheap, like $10 or $15 or something) or learn to live without this feature.

Your original post just sounded so random I though you were a troll too but your subsequent posts showed that you weren't. Don't get offended.

Yeah. What you're getting is the correct behavior. What you're wanting is a feature of WindowShadeX.

I uninstalled a whole bunch of applications, and now I can double-click on the title bar to reduce the window to only the title bar!

Pressing the Command key two times still doesn't reduce the window to only the title bar, like it used to.

Now I'll begin reinstalling applications one at a time, and see what happens.

In my opinion: this has nothing to do with Mac OS X, but everything with haxies.
What you are actually are complaining against is the OS X principles.

Wrong forum.

I am looking at the title of the forum, which says, "Troubleshooting and Discussion." I am not complaining about the Mac OS X.

Looks like somebody else is complaining about my needing some help.

I do appreciate those who have the attitude of trying to be helpful, rather than offering only negative criticism. Macs are the best!

hold the bickering for a sec.

Yea, I think you miss windowshade (where you double click on the title bar and the entire window goes up into the titlebar). That was a pre OSX feature. I am new to OSX and I kind of miss that feature also. I liked it as a quick way to jump back and forth between other open windows (minimizing is a slightly longer route).

Aparently as someone mentioned you can get this feature back with WindowshadeX. The other thing - I am finding the 'expose' feature pretty neat. It's like (what was the futuristic movie with Tom Cruise where he worked the computer glass with his hands?)!! You may find that helpful (just hit the F9 key while several windows are open, all your windows become thumbnails, then you click on one and it becomes foremost).

Hope that helps

But the dock.. I totally love the dock. I actually get excited to use my computer. I bought a PC last year and *never* got that feeling. You can make is smaller, and you can also change the minimize mode from "genie" to just "scale" effect, I went with that and it seems faster.

OS X has so many great features!! I'm holding off a bit before I upgrade to Tiger though. My roommate is a PC fan, and has been complaining about my iBook ever since he moved in. He doesn't have a computer, so he is stuck with using my G4 iBook!!

I've been trying to teach/show him as much as I can. He has made some positive comments about OS X, and one was about the Dock! He really likes the Dock. Also, he is impressed with my backgrounds images. I have the desktop set to change the background picture every 5 seconds, and he thinks that is great!

I still love my old PowerMac 7300/500, which actually is faster than my 1Ghz G4 iBook! I'm amazed that an old PM running at only 500Mhz (upgrad card) is faster than a 1Ghz G4!!

I think the next Mac I buy will be a G5 desktop, maybe the dual processor! Maybe even a G6?

GUI Customization:
Themes, icon sets, boot panel hacks, replacement splash screens, and desktop pictures.

This is the forum you are looking for.

What you are saying has nothing to do with OS X features, it's about haxies and their behaviour, not about OS X behaviour.

This goes to GUI customization as OS X behaves exactly as expected.

Thanks for pointing me to the correct forum. I'll keep that in mind for next time I have a question of similar nature.

It doesn't matter: sometimes we all don't know where the culprit lies, that's why we try to help each other -> 2 know more then 1.
In this case it was simple, after trying out some haxies, I decided not to continue using them as they gave me too much headache so since I didn't have the symptoms you described which I didn't have, I understood it was not the OS, and therefor you are better off being among people who use the haxies as well: they might have hands-on experience.
Have fun!
