Has anyone noticed if running these themes impact performance much if any at all?
I normally run Crystal Clear theme and I notice slowdown at times.
Any thoughts on this?

SS will only slow down your apps at launch time, so it can patch the app's UI on-the-fly. Once loaded, the app won't be any slower than without SS. But we're talking seconds here, nothing really dramatic (depending on your Mac model of course).
As for Crystal Clear, remember that this theme uses a transparency hack (SetAlphaValue) that *might* be slowing down the system a bit. OS X wasn't meant to display transparent windows and such all the time, so I'm guessing that the hack is indeed taxing the system because it needs more effort to display the windows with proper transparency.
Have you tried, just for comparison sake, to run a minimalist theme like Cube and see if you notice slowdowns (turning off SetAlphaValue of course)?

SS slowed down my apps more than just launch time. It's not like Kaliedoscope was at slowing the system down. But there is a noticeable difference. I know the people who make the app like to say otherwise. But the what you said above is a mistruth.
The main reason I quit using Kaleidoscope and SS was the slowing down and odd dodgy behavior.

Kevin, we all know you're anti-unsanity and don't miss an opportunity to say so. I'm no Unsanity fan-boy, I'm relating my experience as a user : on my dual 2.3Ghz G5, I only see a marginal slowdown when launching apps but that's it. My G5 never felt sluggish with SS running, nor did I experience any dodgy behavior. I'd be the first to ditch SS if I noticed a significant slowdown of my system. I haven't.
Of course, if you have a beige 233Mhz G3, I'd recommend against using SS

i am getting slowdown and wonky behavior, but i cannot nail down exactly what the issue is.

so is the general thought that SS makes your system significantly slower?
i was trying to get responses from people to gauge how slow their systems were because of it.

i've been using shapeshifter for years, (since a 400mhz pismo) and would agree that opening apps is a little slower, but once you're open, all is good (now on a 1.5g powerbook).
so...i dont see any slowdowns in using apps, just opening them (and we're talking a slight delay...slight!)

No "real world" differences here using SS on a MB C2D, don't even notice any app startup lag, anyone care to go all benchmark-esque on this issue?
(Even if there was a 2 second lag on starting apps I think I'd still use SS, if I have to spend so long in front of a screen I'm gonna need it to be BE-AU-TI-FUL...)
