Turn your volume WAAAY down. Then reboot and make whatever noise you want it to with your mouth.
(I think said sound isn't changeable)

It's theoretically possible, but the sound is stored in firmware, so hacking it is an extreme proposition.

It's virtually impossible. I've seen an iBook G3 before with a different sound, but I have absolutely no clue how they did it.

It would be nice if they changed it on a somewhat more regular basis. The current sound isn't actually wrong or anything, it just gets boring after hearing it for the past ten years...

I was shocked yesterday when I accidentally found out how to stop the chime on my Macbook Pro. Makes starting up in class and the library so much better! Down with the chime!

There is a freeware software what do that... don't change the sound but silence it.
I use it on a iMac PPC and a MacBook Pro CoreDuo 2.
Hope you like it!

No way easy to change the sound.
You can stop the chime altogether as others have mentioned by:
1: Remembering to mute your sound before each shutdown/restart.
2. Installing software that automatically does the exact same thing.
I used to use the software when I was in college. It made using a laptop in class far more lecture friendly. I don't think profs mind the occasional "DONG" but as an every day thing it would be mildly annoying/disruptive.
