Hi all,
I'm a new Mac user and I wanted to customize my Mac OS X experience a bit. I've got a few vector wallpapers with a light background that do not really fare well with the new menu bar, so I wanted to turn off translucency on the menu bar.
My question: is the "sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 0.62" command safe to run to disable the translucent bar? I don't want to have an application running in the background all of the time just to change this and I don't really want to have go to through my entire wallpaper collection and add a white or black strip along the top. Does this command have any negative side effects on other applications or functionality/stability of the operating system?
Thanks,
|

No, it is perfectly safe and will make your menu bar opaque.

It's not supported by Apple, but I haven't heard any reports of it causing problems.

When 10.5.2 comes out should I revert this menu bar hack along with the 2D dock at the bottom (using defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO)?

No, it shouldn't matter. I mean, you CAN, but why?
EDIT: Actually, yes, at least for the menu bar, because it is now a SysPrefs option in 10.5.2

Ah, I knew the option was in 10.5.2 for the menu bar translucency which is why I was going to revert the com.apple.WindowServer hack. I was just curious because normally I know when it comes to user interface hacks on Windows I'd have to restore the original files or reformat before applying a "service pack", damn Windows habits in me I suppose.

It's actually a good idea on the Mac too if you're hacking system files, though this particular hack is somewhat unlikely to cause trouble.

Really? Would that be through an "Archive and Install" or just completely wipe the drive down and reinstall the system software? The reason I'm asking is because I've just finally got this notebook set up exactly how I want it and I'd hate having to go through with reformatting again. It's just a simply preference file hack, it should revert to normal with the option removed should it not?

Yes, just reverting the plist would work.
