Comrades,

I would like to change the icon of all files of a paticular extension but there is not such an option anywhere. We I can do is to just set the icon for a single file itself and not for all files on the same kind (under the same "extension"). For example, I did set all my .SRT files to be opened with TextEdit, and now they have a awful and terrible icon of a black screen with the EXEC words on it. I really want to change the icon for some kind of "text document!"

I don't like also the VLC/Videolan default icons. They are ugly...
It could be wonderful to replace all the .AVI files with my owns.

Also, I have few other icons associated to it's extension that I would love to be able to change.
I have searched the forums and I did find anything regarding this question.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your attention!
G.

I'm not at my Mac but couldn't you right-click on VLC, for example, and "show package contents" then find the offending icons within and replace them?

Nice tip!
I will try.

But I still wonder - how to change the icon for a entire particular extension?
Maybe by replacing a .ICNS file inside some deeper resource file in the system?

Yes, in the application bundle that defines an icon, you have to replace the .icns files with the ones you prefer. (You'll also have to log out and in and possibly wave a dead chicken around your computer in order to make LaunchServices notice the change.)

Note that depending on the application, you might have to redo this when you upgrade to a new version.
