Just wondering if I would have to "hack" it or modify it with third party software or if I can do this with OSX?

Do you mean the title of each application as you hover over? I myself haven't heard of a way.

Depends on the OS< but I think tinkertool used to let you affect the size of the font. So maybe you could reduce it to a size where it's barely noticeable?
