The UN General Assembly voted 133 to 4 (with 15 abstentions) in favor of the demand that "Israel not deport or threaten safety of Yasser Arafat". The 4 no-votes came from Israel, the US....(no surprises there)...., Micronesia and the Marshall Islands (you may remember the last two from their pivotal roles in the "Coalition of the Willing™").

Israel was quick to dismiss the vote with Ariel Sharon stating: "We will not change our positions as a result of this or any other vote".

I think the Haaretz article sums it up quite nicely:
Turning to the General Assembly after a U.S.
veto in the Security Council is a time-honored
tactic for the Arab bloc as it traditionally
enjoys strong support there. But while council
votes can be binding under international law,
assembly measures merely reflect the will of
the international community.

In related news, thousands of Israeli demonstrators have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv denouncing the Sharon government and demanding an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories.

there's a reason why the UN General Assembly doesn't make binding resolutions. Now we see it. Thankfully the Powers had the foresight to see this, and left the real decision-making to the countries that matter, i.e., the permanent members of the Security Council.

Weren't there more than 6000 people protesting Megans Law? IIRC there were tens of thousands protesting a law that allowed neigbors to know if peidophiles moved into their neighborhood. I don't think on any scale that counts as a real protest.

Israel wants to keep the tensions high. It's good for politics and elections.

Secondly. It's not like they lose anything for doing this... The UN won't do a thing. It's not like the US will stop backing them unconditionally. It's not like they lose money (since we can't cut funding if we wanted).
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?

The only way there is going to be peace over there is when one side 'beats' another. Israel would and could mow down Hamas, Hezbollah, and Islamic Jihad. They can easily chuck Arafat as well. The world should just let them, and then move on.

You think if they 'chuck' Arafat the Palestinians will just shrug their shoulders, go home and keep quiet?

Israel's latest genius stroke of intelligence has pushed Arafat's popularity amongst the Palestinians to an all time high - 'removing' Arafat now would be like throwing a lighted match into an oil well.

Way to make Arafat irrelevant.
