Fwd: Eagle
From Billy..................

This is something to think about! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages... The following verse is from the Quran, (the Islamic Bible)

"Quran (9:11) -- For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced; for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; and there was peace."

Note the verse number!!!!!

Truth be told, the word "eagle" doesn't appear anywhere in the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an. Neither, it goes without saying, does this phony verse combining American symbolism (the bald eagle is the official national emblem of the U.S.A.) with recent history and Islamic prophecy.

Verse 9:11 of the Qur'an is about repentance and reads as follows in three different English translations:
But (even so), if they repent, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity,- they are your brethren in Faith: (thus) do We explain the Signs in detail, for those who understand.

But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail Our revelations for a people who have knowledge.

But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and We make the communications clear for a people who know.
The earliest instance I could find of the fake passage, evidently intended as a joke in its original context, is in a Usenet posting dated February 14, 2003.

Hmmm, Surah 9:11 is as follows:

But (even so), if they repent, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity,- they are your brethren in Faith: (thus) do We explain the Signs in detail, for those who understand.

I didn't know the verse myself but I knew it was fake. I found multiple online versions of the Quran and looked up that verse, and searched the whole thing for the word "eagle" and found it to be bogus. This is what I sent my dad (being the one who sent it to me) in reply:

You can forward this on as well. This is the true "9:11" of the Quran. There is no mention of the word "eagle" in it at all. The internet is funny that way. People just make up whatever they want and pass it along as truth. Amazing.

"[9.11] But if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, they are your brethren in faith; and We make the communications clear for a people who know."
Thanks for the urban legend link. I like those. They debunk nearly everything my dad sends me in e-mails. I was wondering if anyone here would take it seriously or bother looking up info.

That was quite interesting. I remember reading about a passage in the Hadith (sayings of Muhammed), that there would come a time when there would be two great superpowers in the world, and what they claimed was virtually the same. It then goes on to talk about how this would come at a time when humanity would build buildings reaching into the sky; that people would travel on vehicles in the sky. Interesting stuff.

From The Sacred Text Archive

From the Pickthall translation:
9:11 But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail Our revelations for a people who have knowledge.
From the Palmer Translation (note that this translation takes the form of prose, so there is no eleventh verse, so this is the eleventh paragraph):
9:11The Jews say Ezra is the son of God; and the Christians say that the Messiah is the son of God; that is what they say with their mouths, imitating the sayings of those who misbelieved before.- God fight them! how they lie!
Instances of eagle found in either: none.

Just in case, I reversed the order:
11:9And if we cause man to taste some mercy from Us and afterward withdraw it from him, lo! he is despairing, thankless.
11:9Who is more unjust than he who forges against God a lie? they shall be set before their Lord, and the witnesses shall say, ‘These it is who lied against their Lord.’ Aye! God’s curse is on the unjust who turn men away from the path, and crave to make it crooked, and in the hereafter disbelieve! They cannot make Him helpless in the earth, nor have they other than God for patrons. Doubled for them is the torment. They could not hear, nor did they see! Those it is who lose themselves; and that which they did devise has strayed away from them. No doubt but that in the hereafter these are those who lose!
Instances of eagle found in the entirety of either translation: none.
(I searched by entering the following searches in to google:
I smell an urban legend in the making like that whole 'drums of war' thing that was supposedly by Caesar, but was in fact a recent piece of prose.

Well, I wanted to post this in the main Lounge, but realized that if I did, I'd be 1) criticized for not putting it in the Politics Lounge, and 2) criticized again for doing it as a Mod. Plus, I wanted to see if anyone would take it at face value and run. But ah well. Such is the way it goes.
