The funny thing is that Schroeder's Germany and government have had a much tougher stance on the US and the war than the French (remember the Hitler/Bush analogy from one of Schroeder's minister) but people seem much eager to forgive them than they would forgive the French.
I know Schroeder will do whatever it takes but still.... I would be interested in seeing what his people think about this last reversal.

Dissent is not the problem. It's France's active undermining and rabid campaigning against the US that troubles its citizens.

I don't think Shroeder has promised what you think he has promised. This looks like a simple reconcilliation of diplomatic relations. Germany isn't committing troops or withdrawing it's support for the French position of demanding a more "realistic timetable" for returning sovereignty to Iraq.
Its nice they are talking again, but I wouldn't say Germany is "onboard" just yet.

So Germany is going to help bail the Americans out. Good for them.
I'd imagine the rednecks here will see it as jumping on the bandwagon, which is a pity.

Good for Germany. I have found respect for them again.

I am sure there will be. Germany hasn't been the same since it got it rear handed to them in WWII.

We should wait for France to offer their assistance, as well.
Then we should decline their help.

French: "As you wish!"
Really a sort of "SMACKDOWN" the 300++ families with dead members would appreciate!

Two things:
1) Germany expressly excluded any military assistance to the US.
2) France beat Germany to it by one day, saying on Monday that it wouldn't exercise its veto.

Just take a look at yourselves, and listen to what you're saying. you talk like the US has this god given right to do whatever it pleases, and damn those who disagree. France has the balls to stand up against the US, and good for them, and their citizens.

It has nothing to do with being gullible. But that was a nice projection.

Well, Bush really needs to do something to share the burden (in terms of costs). That's why he's so nice to Schroeder. As we have seen (e. g. in Evian), he seems to prefer even Chirac.
But Germany is the more potent partner (in terms of money and attitude). Germany will still not dispatch any troops to Iraq, and it will continue to press for an `even more vital' role of the UN.
Of course, Germany has been helping the US all along, quietly of course. German troops are still in Afghanistan, soon to be deployed in the outback. It's not like we haven't been on the King of Gas Guzzler Driver's agenda.
My guess is that the German government uses the chance to influence the US's foreign politics in Germany's favor. Bush's position is continually weakening, his reelection is in danger, so he has to fight the exploding budget, the loss of international support (yeah, yeah, Britain is with you ...), and the some positive news. The Aces Of Spade (Hussein and Bin Laden) are still out there ...

Agreed. He has Congress calling his people liars without planning, Bremer getting all red-faced and angry at the barrage, Senate talling him to pass the collection plate 'round the UN and local approval ratings at an all time low. Some of the retards on this board don't see the difference between Bush and the USA. It's not so much that the *USA* needs help and it's not so much that people don't like Americans; it's that *GW Bush* needs help, it's that people don't like HIM.
I think the agenda of countries like France and Germany is to quiten tensions with the USA down as they watch Bush slip off the chessboard. They know full well that Iraq is not going to fix itself before the elections and that if Iraq is a mess, Americans will vote for someone who promises a larger role for the UN and cooperation generally. Someone who rejects isolationism, the use of peremptory force - all of the things that are at the core of this spat. The Peace Alliance's stance on the war has already been vindicated irrespective of how many times Bush and his poodle say they did the right thing. The Peace Alliance leaders have gained respect not only within their electorates but within the USA. They will play nicely with the Bush at a rhetorical level and do as little as possible on the ground in Iraq. Bush can't force them to get involved and blaming them for the problem when they are ostensibly working with him is not going to deflect homegrown resentment for his policies. Iraq will be a mess and Bush will get kicked out - just like his Daddy. Hopefully someone who isn't a crackhead, financial failure, alcoholic, lying, draft dodger will get the job in his stead and we'll all live happily ever after.

So long as they let people like you vote, I wouldn't be surprised if he were reelected! I think some people would vote for him even if monkeys did start flying out of his butt on live TV.
I wasn't predicting the election outcome. I was merely telling you what game I think the Peace Alliance is playing. They're hoping he'll be gone next election. Of course, if Bush is still there come next year, then they just carry on playing the same game for another 4 years. Tying the US up in Iraq is the best scenario they can imagine at this point. So long as they can do that without hurting their reputation amongst the bulk of Americans, all's well that ends badly.

Here's what I meant - As long as they let people (like you) who support George Bush irrespective of what he says or does, vote, then I wouldn't be surprised if he were reelected.

I tell you what, why don't you go to Google Images and find all the pictures you can, photoshop "Racist" onto each of them and post them one after the other in this thread. Wouldn't that be fun?
Then the adults can move into another thread and have an adult conversation.
