I wonder if Arnold is winning by such a landslide because people got so turned off by all the dirty campaigning directed at him these last few days?
The polls showed the race much closer up until a few days ago, but it looks like the negative attacks actually turned people to vote more FOR Arnold and against the sleezy attacks and desperation of the incumbent?
Also.. I'd like to know where those Davis polls showing the race was 50/50 on the recall question which were widely touted on the news up until this morning. It was obviously just lies.. which is so sad..to be that desperate.

Cool! I like Arnold, he's definitely the "dirty bastard" I would vote for. (Meaning, he supports the same agendas that I approve of.)

The media, obviously, is suffering from over-exposure. Seems they yelled too loud and the sheep ran the other way. Amateurs.

You do realize that if the numbers stay this way, Schwarzenegger will have actually won with a majority of votes? I just find this interesting, because I remember about how people said that a candidate in this election would surely win with a minority of votes.
Personally, I don't much care either way. I mean, given the semi-random ordering of names on the ballot (which is also different in every district), we will all forever know that the only reason Schwarzenegger won is because he was probably the only one most people could find in a list of 135 unalphabetized names. This is California, after all.
Which, of course, the Left will glom onto, proclaiming the ballots as "illegal" even though they're the ones who designed it that way in the first place, so that candidates with early-lettered names wouldn't get an "unfair advantage" by being higher up in the list.
However, I must say, this will be amusing. I remember after the 2002 election season, when liberals in California proclaimed with pride that they were the only state which had elected a blind Democratic ticket. That breeze I feel must be all the deflating egos.
Again, I honestly try not to align myself with any political party in particular. I don't even live in California, so all I can do is play armchair analyst. However, I find the antics of the Democrats in this whole farce to have been much more amusing than those of any other group. I'm sure it will be different in the next elections.

Truly a pathetic joke if Schwarzenegger becomes governor of California. It's Arnold Schwarzenegger. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER. I get this feeling people are going to wake up and say ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER is our governor. What have we done?

Yes they probably will. But on the other hand, this is going to be hilarious to watch unfold.... it will also be pathetic to see the democratic process perverted in such a way. But hey, its california right?

I don't see how it's a perversion of the democratic process for the people to democratically change their democratically elected leaders.

they'll do the same thing Minnesota did; raise their eyebrows, go "Hmmm...", take a bite of their danish, and turn to the page to the financial section.
California will have something on all the rest of us though, their Governor really can beat the crap out of ours. DAMN, this is better than any fiction I've ever seen!

I agree with BRussell that there's probably going to be a short honeymoon and then people will think "My God, what if he can't save us? We might actually have to face up to our problems."
But I hope he does well, partly out of good faith and partly because I hope he represents a new direction for the Republican Party.

The leader of the democratic party was just interviewed on Fox and he basically said that they'll give Arnold 100 days and then hinted that they'd try recalling him.

The same way they spin everything else. By repeating the same mistruths until it becomes "fact" (or at least until the media starts to believe it). First they'll cry and complain the recall wasn't legal (ignoring the fact that several courts verified the recall and the procedures were legal). Then they'll try and tie it up with lawsuits.
They are desperate because their methods don't work, and the people of California had to experience the consequences. Democrats controlled the state by a majority, and as shown, throwing money at something until you are in debt does not fix the problem.

How amusing. Every major democrap in the state was either running ads or saying that this recall was costly to the state, and a waste of money. Now they are going to turn around and try a recall of their own?
Hardcore hypocrats who just can't accept the fact that they are probably about to lose. Much like how they couldn't accept that they lost Florida in 2000, but there is likely going to be a little more "cushion" of a GOP win in CA because I predict in any case, Ahnold will have 50% or more of the voters behind him.
If Arnold is elected and the recall goes through, I'm sure the blind liberals in this state (so many of them) will follow this "Recall Arnold" bandwagon off the cliff. But Arnold is going to have to do something like turn off the power in the state for a month, and then dump all of our money in the ocean for this little effort to succeed.

This is amusing. They showed camp Arnold a little while ago, and it was really active. Lots of people.
Then they showed camp Davis, and the reporters and media outnumber the supporters present.
I could make a snide little comment about the media being too liberal, but I'll just try and enjoy the rest of the night.

Probably not, but he wants to stop the excessive taxing, crappy programs, and in general stop the massive hemoragging of money by the state. And that's a start in correcting the problems.
And I would like the think that Californian's in general did not get themselves into this mess, but rather most of the liberals in the state. Since they dominated this state until tonight (it looks). At least some are voting yes on the recall to try and correct their previous mistakes.

So, by by cutting taxes even more, the infrastructure is going to repair itself, and the schools are going to repair themselves, and many of the other problems that state has are going to repair themselves? I didn't realize Arnold was a magician; I thought he was a bodybuilder! That's right, blame it on the liberals; that's always easier than facing the problems head on!

Blame it on those who control the state for not doing their jobs. Right now it's the liberals.
Apparently, spending all of our money and then trying to raise taxes so we can spend some more is a "trick" that most of the people saw through. Regardless of tonight's outcome, the fact that it got this far, and the fact that the results are going to be close helps demonstrate that.

When taxes are too high businesses leave the state and move to places like Nevada. So do rich people. That decreases revenue. It doesn't increase them.
I'm not saying he will have an easy time. California is in such a mess that I don't think anyone would have an easy time. But to say that the only solution is to raise taxes ignores some of the serious issues regarding California.

As a Californian I 'm just embarrassed. It's a triumph of style over substance. Nevertheless, I'm not one to wish someone failure just because I didn't support him. I hope he does well.
The only thing I'm wary of is the circus atmosphere that will continue from now on. As much as I like discussing politics and elections, I'm always a little relieved when we can get a breather after an election. With Arnie in office I have a feeling it might continue to be a media circus for quite a while.

I couldn't care less about any sexual harassment allegations against Arnold. The thing that disturbs me the most about this is that we have someone going into what is probably the most powerful governor's office who has zero experience in public office.
Republicans are happy because they think that he will toe the party line, and since he will have no choice but to rely on his advisors, I imagine he will do that for most things. I guess it's not much different from Bush in that sense. But I can't help but think that this was a big mistake, on many levels.

At the moment, with 60% of precincts reporting, it's 54% to 46% percent for the recall (and it's been getting closer as more come in). Lies? Desperate? Your preconceptions are showing. I'd say it was well within the margin of error.

Same here. The economy and the job market both seem to be on the upswing. I hope Schwarzenegger and his advisors make the right decisions and get the state back up on its feet.

A little higher level than that. I'm sure these terms have been used before, but here is my understanding of these political terms. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.
Hypocrat: A hypocritical democrat. Saying "Boo, the recall is terrible for our economy" for 2 months, and then going around and supporting a recall effort against someone who has not even taken office yet is undeniably hypocritical. Not sure what the equivilent Republican term is.
(On a related note, I must say I was impressed that Davis decided to reject his supporters who shouted that idea of another recall to him during his concession speech. He may have been wrong in a lot of things, but his call for unity was important, and he hasn't done anything that shows he's a sore loser (yet), which is a good thing for moving forward.)
Democrap; A crappy democrat. Really subjective, depending on what you define crappy as. In my case, just a different term in reference to anyone who ran an ad or went on record and said that this whole recall thing set a bad precident or something similarly bad about it, and now wants to try to recall Arnold for whatever reason. The only equivilent term I can come up with right now is republic*nt. Although I suppose there are many out there who just prefer to use "bush lover" or something, as they consider it to be worse. Etc.

What a bunch of hypocrites...from the same people who cried how the recall was costing millions of taxpayer dollars:
A 100-Day Honeymoon?
But the Kennedy contingent aside, Democrats are already sniffing for blood. Now that a successful recall has been launched after 31 attempts in the state, Democrats are talking about recalling Schwarzenegger. California Democratic Party consultant Bob Mulholland said he was considering organizing a retaliatory recall if Schwarzenegger does not demonstrate solutions in the first 100 days.
Rainbow/PUSH head Jesse Jackson, who has campaigned with Davis repeatedly for the last several weeks, announced that a challenge to the results was likely since voters were disenfranchised thanks to the speedy nature of the race that forced polling places to be condensed.
"To reduce [the number of polling places] by two thirds and consolidate, there are thousands of people who are disenfranchised," Jackson said.
But some Democrats recognized that voter dislike of Davis trumped any legal maneuvering.
"I think what we saw today in California was really an anti-incumbent sentiment strongly expressed," said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.
Davis discouraged any future recall attempts, saying it was time to "put the chaos and division of the recall behind us and do what's right for the state of California.
"I have placed a call to Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger just a few minutes ago to congratulate him on being elected governor," Davis said from the ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, where he celebrated his first gubernatorial election victory five years earlier. His concession speech came at close to 10 p.m. PDT, not quite two hours after the polls closed.
Speaking over boos from the crowd, Davis said he had offered his full support to Schwarzenegger's transition team, as is customary when governors pass the torch.
Later, talking to his supporters, Schwarzenegger said he had received a "gracious call" from Davis. As Schwarzenegger supporters emitted groans, reflecting the two-man contest the race had become in its closing days, the governor-elect said he vowed that his transition team would treat Davis' team with the "utmost of respect."
Dreier will be Schwarzenegger's transition team chairman. Jim Richardson, chief of staff to California State Sen. Jim Brulte, an early Schwarzenegger supporter, will become Schwarzenegger's transition director.
Analysts say it remains to be seen whether former rivals will accept Schwarzenegger's promise of an "olive branch of political reconciliation."

i was all for this election from the beginning. my parents and friends said i was stupid. i love the idea of multiple candidates from multiple parties running against each other, so that people really could vote for their best candidate based on pertinent issues.
but looking at the figures, it doesn't make sense. 46% wanted no change, 24% want arnold, with the next closest contender getting 16%. (these numbers i calculated from CNN.com). yet, the number two becomes number one?

It's only fair - seeing as how you Democrats hafta claim Gray Davis, the loser who was tossed out before his term ended...and before he could do any more damage to the state.

You're right, I did. Thanks for catching that slip up. In order:
Arnie should get rid of (in order):
Mexican'ts
Blacks
Muslims
Disadvantaged
Indians
Asians (you forgot this one)
Jews
