Good article.
The man is right on:
Dr Mahathir Mohamad told BBC News Online violence had "achieved nothing", for example, for the Palestinians.
But he also accused the West of treating all Muslims as "terrorists".
Nuff said. He captured the situation quite well.
Now will people listen?

He appealed to Muslims worldwide to go back to the "original, true teachings of Islam" and embrace values such as "peace, friendship, brotherhood, and tolerance of people".
I don't know. Will they?

Just let's hope that peaceful Islam isn't yet another oxymoron: this, probably, depends on how their (the Muslims') religion interact with the secularized human values of the "western world".
Personally, I think "organized" (in reality, quite prone to chaos!) religions are basically useless - but, anyway, the peace ideal is already something on a possible path towards more democracy in those countries...

I certainly wasn't ignoring it, I'm just a bit skeptical about Mahathir's statements. He works both sides of the aisles so often, and he's also outright lying when he says:
Malaysia, he said, did not have a problem with Islamic militants because it had acted to stop the "teaching of the politics of hatred" in religious schools.
Malaysia has definitely had problems with Islamic militants, on many fronts, and there is indeed a low-level (mostly political) war going on in Malaysia, with Islamists already running two states, and attempting to further their influence.
I will grant that Malaysia has cracked down on many of their extremist camps, but this is largely out of self-interest. The Islamicists want Mahathir and his ilk gone. Mahathir has also locked up people simply because they disagreed with him, such as Minister Anwar Ibrahim
Really, it's sometimes hard to know what to make of Mahathir. He does some very good things, and some utterly ridiculous things
Regardless, it is indeed good to see (finally) high profile leaders speaking out in exactly the manner I stated such people needed to, regarding Islam and terrorists. Musharif said similar things during his UN speech a few weeks ago as well, which I equally applaud -- though I'm sure the number of death fatwahs out on him doubled since then... and so it goes.

Sounds just like most world leaders.
