I tried to find any scientific studies to back up the California Schools reasons for banning such words as "Yacht" etc. NOTHING DOING!!
There WERE NO STUDIES!!! Only un-scientific 'surveys' with NO DATA to examine!?!?
This crap is happening all over. The liberals and leftists are primarily responsible for this as they hold the reins in most colleges, where the studies originate.
No proof that identifying an "A+" student makes the class moron resentful. It was really about NOT comparing at all. No judgements. WHY? Perhaps because the lib's would come out at the bottom of the list.

Okay.
This is something to do with boats and Californians, I gather, and lack of statistical evidence linking one to the other or a proletarian moron in some way or other.
That's about all the sense I can make of your post.

The point is that many low level political types all over the US fall for the 'scientific proof' BS because they aren't that smart or saavy. We get stupid rules, laws, guidelines etc, based on political opinions instead of facts.
don't reward the acheivers, but protect the loosers at the bottom of the class?
Yacht - being banned in schools in CA is funny. The San Deigo Yacht club has had yachts in Americas Cup competitions for decades.
Oh, lets not have pride in this since the poor illegal alien kid may be resentful?

I agree that political correctness is way, way out of hand. But could you kindly provide a link to this? What exactly did they claim was wrong with the word "yacht" anyway?

You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Millennium, could you please refraining from using the 'Y' word. I'd like MacNN to put it on the censor filter, so we don't offend people further.

[Mary: If you think you're safe from this garbage because you don't live in California, you'd better think twice. California and Texas drive the standards for textbooks used in the ENTIRE country. This IS coming to a textbook near YOU! This should be fair warning that you do NOT want to be using public school programs and their textbooks. There was quite a bit of humorous discussion on our Main Message Board about this list, and the consensus seemed to be that schools should just give the students blank books and let the students write the history.]

Doesn't surprise me a bit - you won't find pictures as this one in public school programs and their textbooks either:

Pagan (banned as ethnocentric when referring to religion; replace with 'non-believer')
So, they think Pagans are Atheists? I'm sure Rooney and Catsank would find that humorous.
I'm not surprised by the list. We're such a pathetic excuse for a society, an entire culture of worthless pu**ies.

FWIW, although I bristle at the anal retentive nature of the list, it IS a guideline for textbooks, which is different than fictional books or other literature.
Although extremely ham-fisted and paranoid, the underlying intent is not a bad one...to prevent textbooks from promoting stereotyping or prejudicial speech.
I just think they went overboard...really overboard with the implementation of the intent.
I am slightly bemused, though, out of that whole list "yacht" is the one that incenses the originator of the thread.

<< I am slightly bemused, though, out of that whole list "yacht" is the one that incenses the originator of the thread. >>
I am an Americas Cup fan, and even race RC models of Australia II(KA-6) and Black Magic (NZL-32).
The San Deigo Yacht Club (IN California) had competed and won the cup, and it should be a point of pride for all those in Ca, except the San Francisco yacht Club, who have competed but not won a cup for the US.
I guess it IS elitist to understand sailing, and be able to appreciate the design of the yacht, the tactics and the long term plan to win the cup.
I guess in CA you're supposed to be stupid?

Well, you're just confirming the accuracy of identifying "yacht" as "elitist".
