NEW YORK — Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari yesterday chastised war opponents at the U.N. Security Council — and the United Nations itself — for failing to help the Iraqi people during three decades of Saddam Hussein's brutal reign.

"One year ago, this Security Council was divided between those who wanted to appease Saddam Hussein and those who wanted to hold him accountable," Mr. Zebari said dispassionately in an address to the 15-member council.
"The U.N. as an organization failed to help rescue the Iraqi people from a murderous tyranny that lasted over 35 years, and today we are unearthing thousands of victims in horrifying testament to that failure. ...
"The U.N. must not fail the Iraqi people again," Mr. Zebari said in a plea for Secretary-General Kofi Annan to return international staffers to Baghdad for relief work and nation-building assistance.
"Settling scores with the United States should not be at the cost of helping to bring stability to the Iraqi people. This squabbling over political differences takes a back seat to [Iraqis´] daily struggle for security, jobs, basic freedoms and all the rights the U.N. is chartered to uphold.

I doubt the US put him up to saying what he did.

Just like Lerk, I can see the future.

I predicted this months ago.

Once the dust settled, Iraqis were gonna be pissed at those that supported the status quo.

Yes. One would naturally expect him to have an unbiased opinion and go against the U.S. if necessary. Naturally.

This guy is amongst those who were essentially handed Iraq on a silver platter - do you seriously expect him to say anything else?

Well considering the UN really hasn't done much in Iraq to help the Iraqi People I'd say no.

17 UN resolutions nothing was done
12 Years of Waiting for Saddam to allow inspectors back into Iraq

Where is the UN now? An attack on there compond and they turn tail and run. If they really wanted to help the Iraqi people they would not have pulled there people out. They would have stayed the course. No Matter what you think of the US and the policies of the Bush Administration they HAVE stayed the course and HAVE freed the Iraqi people and HAVE been helping improve the lives of the Iraqis while the UN still hasn't returned.

You mean a former peshmerga of the KDP is critical of the UN?

You mean a member of the group that in 1993 absorbed the Kurdistan Popular Democratic Party, the Kurdistan Socialist Party of Iraq, and the Popular Alliance of Socialist Kurdistan?

A central member of the group that in 1996, with the help of its Turkish and Iranian backers, launched brutal attacks on the PUK?

Ah, yes. Yet another member of the CPA who's life reads like a Demon's resume.
