From NYT:
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 — David Kay, the head of the effort by the United States to find the banned weapons cited by President Bush as a primary reason for going to war with Iraq, is considering stepping down in the next few months before the group he leads completes its search and issues a final report, government officials said Thursday.
Dr. Kay, 63, is widely respected as thorough and straightforward even among critics of the war who have raised doubts about whether the threat from Iraq was as dire as the administration made it out to be. Should he leave, Democrats and some weapons experts said, it could fuel a perception that the United States is winding up the hunt without having found any caches of biological or chemical weapons.
Doesn't seem like the hunt for WMD is going too well.

Interesting. Not sure it proves absolutely anything, but it certainly seems odd for him to quit at just this moment.
I could speculate that it seems he's afraid or unwilling to be the point person to make the final report. that could mean one or any of several things, including no WMDs found, or just fed up with the pressure to produce them...
it'll be interesting to see what the final report says.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Spacefreak or Spliffdaddy claiming access to "whispers" that the report in September would relate massive amounts of WMDs found? If so, Kay quitting now would be weird.

It was spacefreak. And Kay has said that the security situation in Iraq has made the project last much longer than he expected when he signed on. He's just tired and wants out. On the surface, this doesn't say anything about the status of WMD.

What I mentioned were the whispers of long-range chinese missiles tipped with cannisters made specifically for transporting and mixing (in flight) sarin. Looks like this will be included in the February report.
As for Kay, he is also upset that the coalition has reassigned a good portion of his staff to work on intelligence regarding the insurgency, and that he feels he was undermanned even before this reassignment.

Liar. Maybe we should sent out the Lerkdog to find your postings about this very topic?

No, that sounds like what I remember him posting. Of course February isn't September on my calendar, but that's a technicality. It took 8 months to find Saddam...and we knew he existed.

You're correct. Direct link is here...
The next Kay report should be even more informative. At the time of the first Kay report, his team had only inspected 10 of an extimated 230 sites, and they had 9 miles of documents to go through.
Whispers I've heard include an arsenal of 650-mile Chinese missiles that have a specially-made canister tip that could only be used for sarin (apparently, sarin requires careful and specific mixing while in-flight).

FWIW, the direct link ("whispers") happens to have been posted in december, not prior to september... and refers to missle technology and not WMD, at least, directly.

All right, all right, then it's my bad.
I got confused with his postings about this "massive WMD stashes to be revealed"- scenario.

He also posted pre-september talking about a WMD report that would quiet the critics. I assume that the time-table is now February...so I'll wait a little longer to call him wrong.
Hence the confusion (as powerbook notes)
