How does Dean recover from this?
Will this whole thing blow over or is this his Muskee crying moment that dooms his campaign forever?

Funny stuff. It's important to maintain a sense of humor where politics is concerned.
If I were Dean, I'd immediately book the Letterman Show and play it up. Best way to defuse it.

Steve Ballmer, aka monkeyboy, does this kind of stuff and worse all the time. He's still around.

I think the difference would be the level of resources and viciousness of the opposing side.

Yep. He needs to schedule the circuit: Letterman, Lenno, Daily Show.

Sure he is. He's elected by the shareholders. You mean he's not elected to public office.

I think zigzag is right that it could be defused with some levity. Especially if done correctly.
Unfortunately, Dean's reaction to it and attempts to defuse (including using levity) have proven even more damaging, IMO.
Now he's talking about "I've got warts" or "I lead with my heart, not my head.." which is absolutely the worst thing he could possibly say.
Dean's team has utterly failed him by not preventing him from shooting himself in the foot. Yes, Dean has some substantial polish issues, but those can be overcome--look at Dubya. Talk about unpolished. He's learned those lessons and managed himself quite well since the early gaffes. Dean's team doesn't seem to have managed that. I don't know if they are simply blind to it or if Dean simply doesn't respond to "coaching". I suspect that latter.
I'm dissappointed. I still think Dean is the real deal, but then again I vote on substance not personality. All this talk about having a "finger on the button" is utter nonsense. Do people really think a president can have an argument with his wife or watch his favorite team lose the world series, get drunk, wander the White House and hit "the button" in a moment of madness?
Dean would have learned on the job just like everyone else. Sadly, I do think its over. Already he's pleading and begging instead of talking like the rabble rouser and reformer that drew people to him initially.
I suppose I should be excited that he even got this far, but I think it hurts even more to get so close and then fail. Oh well.

He has just such an appearance booked with Letterman.
I don't think it's over quite yet. Even if he can't pull out of the tailspin before NH, I'd give it until the Feb 3 states before I'd say his campaign is ready for the scrap heap. If he can't pull out several major upsets on Feb 3, then he's definitely toast.
All just IMHO.
