Has anybody ever clicked "Post/Read Discussions" at the end of a Yahoo! news story? I did for the first time the other day, and I think it makes all the arguments here look restrained and refined in comparison.

From a story about texas burying a french sailor:

I'M GLAD 3000 PEOPLE DIED ON SEP 11TH..AND GOT CRUSHED BY 747'S, 10 TON CYNDER BLOCKS AND SPLATTER ON THE GROUND LIKE SH!T HITTING FANS. DO YOU LIKE?
A reader's opinion on the Bird Flu:

I HOPE IT KILLS EVERY CHINK, EVERY LAST FILTHY ONE OF THEM.
Basically, all the messages are like this. What kind of people write this stuff? Every story seems to be accompanied by people talking about killing muslims or something like that. Do you think that the internet facilitates the spread of extreme political beliefs?

Yes.

Many people 'say' things online that they would never say to your face. Intrapersonally however the more isolated we become as societies the more that this type of behavior transcends the internet architecture and out into the 'real' world. Terrorist organizations act on this level. It is now well known that they utilize secret code transmited via the internet and other means. They isolate their intentions even going as far as homogenizing themselves into foreign societies. Dangerous times that we live in.

One unfortunate side effect of 9/11 is that it seemed to give a small minority of Americans permission to unchain all their pent-up racial/ethnic hatred and anxiety. (Its left-wing corollary is the "America is a filthy fascist imperialist pig-state" crowd.) The anonymity of the Internet makes expressing these feelings easier, so in a sense you could say the Internet helps spread extremist views, but statistically I doubt the effect is very powerful or widespread.
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.
