US launches Arab TV channel
All I can think of at the moment is WTF?
This basically says it all:
Syrian newspaper Tishrin was even more blunt.
"This station is part of a project to re-colonise the Arab homeland that the United States seeks to implement through a carrot-and-stick policy," it said.

This dope sounds scared that something besides a fate of ignorance, poverty, and false martyrdom might appeal to Arab youths.
Those are my thoughts.

So, to counter Arab state-controlled-media, America comes up with it's own state-controlled-media for Arabs?
Figures.

I went to Dubai once for a weekend. Whenever I went out the hotel to get something to eat I couldn't figure out what those animals roasting in the restaurant windows were. Maybe FOX kebabs.

It's good. Pluralism of information is always good.
And it certainly can't hurt if the Arabian world gets to know American culture a bit better. And vice versa. That can only help to reduce prejudice and fear of the unknown.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Apprently no American mid-east policy makers have figured out that actions speak louder than words.
Winning Arab hearts and minds doesn't require better marketing, it requires concrete action on relatively few important political fronts.
I thought the president understood this when he showed considerable committment (and surprisingly balanced language) towards the Israeli/Palestinian issue. Unfortunately, Sharon has thumbed his nose at most of Washington's tough talk and rendered Bush's efforts hollow and meaningless.
Once and for all holding Israel's feet to the fire on issues like the security "fence" or settlements would do infinitely more for establishing American credibility than all the glossy, high-production value marketing campaigns we could possibly muster.
To hear the administration argue that invading Iraq gave us credibility is to begin to suspect that policy makers are almost entirely clueless about exactly what kind of decisive action would actually benefit US-Arab relations.
This announcement confirms those suspicions.

Arabs know American culture well. If you go to most Arabian cities they have all western shops and businesses. The differences have been political are between Muslim lower classes and the American elite. And they aren't the only ones. The lower classes of South America and even the US itself are pissed off with the corporate 'grab all you can and get out of here world'. Islamists are just a reaction to that, like Marxist guerillas, etc.
A fair deal for the working people of the world is really all everyone wants. If people are happy with their earnings they'll hardly have time to do anything else but prosper.
Vulcan sayings apply here.

Your a minority in your school of thought, but your 100% right.
That's also what the international community, including many of the terorrists themselves have been saying for years.
I tend to believe the source, rather than our misleading president when it comes to stuff like this.
When your loved one is sick in the Hospital, you don't want people patting you on the back. You want doctors doing all they can to help.
It's no different.

The only problem with that school of thought is that the majority seem to believe that doing the right thing with respect to Israel/Palestine will be giving into the demands of the terrorists ... and therefore seem to want to do the exact opposite, only to aggravate the issue further.

Hitler also had a genuine belief that he was doing the right thing for humanity.
Of course, killing is never the best thing for humanity. Especially for things such as nationality, race, religion. The 3 primary reasons for killing and war in the world.

I'd say it's about friggin time. Open media is a plus, and I'm sure this channel will be the most open of the stations these viewers can tune in to.
I find it ridiculous that anyone here even bitches about this. We sit here with hundreds of channels, and you're upset because a part of the world will now have 4 channels instead of 3?
Nobody said this is the ultimate solution to the problems in the Middle East. But it will help in fostering more liberal thinking. And the viewers' worlds will grow leaps and bounds.

Yeah, it seems everyone wants to give in to the Israeli state terrorists. It's freaky. They seem to own everyone.

Meh. So it's biased the opposite way from Al-Jazeera. Good. I hope people watch both networks; maybe with a pair opposing strong biases they'll have at least some semblance of enough information to really think for themselves on the issues presented.

Can you point to something that has been proven wrong that Al-Jazeera reported? And it would be even better if you proved that they kept reporting it after it was known to be false.

I told you where to get it--any major news piece on their site. I'm not going to hold your hand, 'Logic', when their idiocy is so apparent. Maybe if they were more subtle about it, I'd bother.
Clicking to a web page and then a link too much stress on your socialist work ethic?

I have this new channel on my satellite. Al Jazeera also comes on this sat. I gotta say, this new channel (called Al Hurra) is the best quality I've seen of any arabic tv station. The in-between ad things have pristine color and graphics, and the anchors are very modern and hip. This channel is being broadcasted on the old Iraq TV frequency. During the war, the tv station was bombed and was taken off the air. Many months later, a new channel is reborn.
I like this channel, they had a whole 1 hr documentary talking about Seeds for Peace which is a camp in Washington DC that brings together Israelis and Palestinian youth to work for peace. I thought it was wonderful. This kind of stuff is being broadcasted all around the region on satellite to whomever wishes to watch it. It's a positive message. What's Al Jazeera doing to help solve the conflict?
