this NYT story details how right groups are being shut out:

Pentagon officials say they do not expect to be able to provide space for representatives of human rights advocacy groups to observe any military tribunals at the naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, prompting complaints from those groups that the military is trying to shut out potential critics.
Last Friday, the groups wrote to the defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld, asking him to reconsider the matter, saying, "There can be no legitimate governmental reason for denying our access to the proceedings."

Wendy Patten, a Washington representative of Human Rights Watch, said Monday that the reasons given were implausible and that the groups should be entitled to at least one seat that they could rotate among themselves. She noted that the Bush administration had defended itself from critics of the possible tribunals by saying that the proceedings were to be open to wide scrutiny.
thoughts? sounds like even Rumsfeld thinks they should be there...

Well, there you have it Lerk. No safety provided for "civilians" in "THE most classified US Navy facility in the world". Move. Quick! Plenty of space down here. And, Mister Elf, "most classified" wtf does that mean??

So classified they call it camp X-Ray, because you can see right through the chain link walls.

There have been some humans rights people around them while they are being held (far less than most other regimes have let though). This is far from the reason.

Re-read the article. The author means to say, groups have written to Rumsfeld, because the groups think they belong there. The author makes no mention of Rumsfeld's response or beliefs, likewise or contrary.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

lol...you think that any of us see everything that happens there? Besides, JAG trials & tribunals are notorious for being out of the public eye.
