I don't see how blacks in this country don't find this offensive. For me If Kerry or any other Politician of Any party said they wanted to be the first Indian, Asian, Hispanic President i would find this offensive.

President Clinton was often known as the first black president. I wouldn't be upset if I could earn the right to be the second," he told the American Urban Radio Network.

Clinton related particularly well to many black voters and vice-versa; they felt that he genuinely appreciated their culture and their concerns. Thus he was often referred to as "the first black President." Kerry wants to be regarded similarly, although it strikes me as unlikely that he will be.

Dubya likes to go around speaking Spanish to Mexican groups. If he said he wanted to be "the first Mexican President," I would not be offended and I doubt they would either. It just means that he's sympathetic to their particular problems and appreciates their culture. It's what politicians do.

However, I don't think Kerry or Dubya are quite prepared to say that they'd like to be "the first gay President."

You mean the second (or so contemporary gossip had it).

James Buchanan, 15th President of the US.

It is highly doubtful that Kerry would ever be referred to affectionately as the "second black President". From what I've seen so far, he doesn't seem to be able to connect with black people on that level. As a result of Clinton's charisma, style, and the fact that African-Americans fared rather well during his administration (along with everybody else), he was affectionately called "black" by many African-Americans ... which is above and beyond being granted a mere "ghetto pass". The reason why African-Americans weren't offended by this with Clinton was because it was something that we started saying about him. To get something like this you have to be about it ... not talk about it. The fact that Kerry even mentioned wanting this kind of accolade in and of itself shows that he doesn't get it. Consequently, he's already lost a certain amount of "cool points".

That sounds like the kind of thing Howard Dean would say.. these guys can't relate to average people so they make these ham-handed attempts that just come off so badly..
