His national guard unit got called up. So now he's on his way to Texas for more training before they ship him off to the middle east.
God it's good to have him gone... I mean I know that he's going to a war zone, and everything, but god it's good to have him gone..
Went to the send off ceremony, and listened to a bunch of army types, talk about "sucker punching cowards" and "apple pie" the most asanine thing I heard was when the commander said "And when your son, daughter, or husband comes home from this ordeal, they will be a better person for it."
My first instinct says: well what if they die, or lose an arm, or leg? Am I suppose to believe that my brother is better off inside a box 6ft in the earth, or that his right leg was "Holding him back" or something?
Any who, good luck to him.

don't recruiters also use this kinda tactic when talking to prospectives and their parents? the whole "he'll/she'll be more respectful, do things around the house" sort of crap...

Military recruiting in the last 20 years has always centered on Socialism. Let's not forget that the US military is the last great bastion of socialism in this country: free medical, free housing, free food, school, clothing, etc...
You don't see too many ads that hype up the chance to fight. Especially for the reserves and guard. No, they talk about how it will help your career, get you into school, or help you develop character. War is not a selling point for obvious reasons.
At any rate, I hope your brother returns safe and sound. He will have a chance to effect positive change in Afghanistan, but it will really depend on politicians how much good they can do. I just hope he stays safe and returns home soon.

Actually that would be the welfare system.. but hey. At least you have a choice not to be a part of socialism.

I don't feel like sifting through 3 pages of that garbage. Care to quote anyone who claimed that all members of the US military are "murderous babykillers"?

I can't help if you're not going to read it. The sentiment's expressed very clearly. I won't even bother naming names because they'll deny and try to put a spin on it anyway.

I see. Surely no one should be permitted to defend themselves from your accussations and characterizations. That would be....inconvenient.
Meh.
BOT:
Myrkridia, what's your brother do? Do you know where he's going?

Heh...
Military propeganda is starting to get out of hand. Now they get every HS students name/address/phone number AND EMAIL from most High Schools AND colleges.
There was a time when I was a Senior in HS, I was asked to enlist no less than 3 times a week. Most often 5+. Multiple calls, emails. One time walking in the hallway of my school, a recruiting officer just jumped out in front of me... it was like a cartoon.
Now, I just filter my email, so I don't have to deal with that method of recruiting. But they still pester me. And of course, the unsubscribe doesn't work, despite the address ending in "@usarec.army.mil".
These guys are pushing their luck. It doesn't even feel like a legitimate branch of the government anymore. It's like they are trying to scam me into joining. And I know I'm not alone. I know many others with the same experience. Perhaps it's being a certain age at a certain time.
In any regard... it's annoying. Leave me alone. If only the "no means no" laws applied to the government as well.
Suprising they don't offer to sell me viagra.
A little to pushy IMHO. Enough is enough. Get the picture, I'm not planning to enlist. And yesterday it's apparant they got my email yet again. looks like they queried the school directory, and emailed everyone enlistment informatoin. Reilly, Sean R SSG USAREC. Blocks of about 20 email addresses, in the To: field. Not even bcc'ing an entire list.
It's annoying to be dealing with this stuff still.
It is compliant with the Can Spam act... but if unsubscribe doesn't work again... I'm filing a nice complaint. Federal government should at least be able to comply 100% no questions asked.

Can't say I've seen him clubbing any infants persay...
Yeah, I see where you're coming from. Am I for the war, not really, I think the money could have been spent else where and done more good..
But he signed up for this (the guard) so he goes where they tell him to. He also told me that a couple of the guys in his unit apparently tried to commit suicide to prevent from being shipped out.

me. well, not specifically babies...he'll kill whatever he's told to.
murder is murder and to rationalize killing another person in cold blood is arrogant.
do i want him to kill anyone? no
do i want someone to kill him? no

Eeeeh, excuse me, speak for yourself, please.
Keep that in mind before you share some of your insights with others.
