Yes, the US wants Taiwan to remain "sorta" independent. If Taiwan declares itself completely independent from China, the US will be drawn into a war with China. Nobody wants that. The US has the military capability to win such a war, but not without great cost. So, along with China and possibly France, the US is trying to influence Taiwan's elections.
