As the 9/11 commission investigates what Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush might have done to prevent the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, one piece of evidence the commission will examine is a videotape secretly recorded by a CIA plane high above Afghanistan. The tape shows a man believed to Osama bin Laden walking at a known al-Qaida camp.
The question for the 9/11 commission: If the CIA was able to get that close to bin Laden before 9/11, why wasn’t he captured or killed? The videotape has remained secret until now.
In 1998, President Clinton announced, “We will use all the means at our disposal to bring those responsible to justice, no matter what or how long it takes.”
NBC News has obtained, exclusively, extraordinary secret video, shot by the U.S. government. _It illustrates an enormous opportunity the Clinton administration had to kill or capture bin Laden. Critics call it a missed opportunity.

You posted this before I could. I wonder if Usama was contributing to Bill Clinton at the time - or at least one of his followers. Wouldn't suprise me.

That wouldn't have stopped the attacks.
YEARS before the attacks before the people were in place? Sure.
Months? Weeks? no.
I could just imagine though if Bush HAD taken him out just months into office.
The liberals would have cried cowboy and screamed murderer.

They would have had a chance had they taken the opportunity right off the bat in January 2001.

No.
Oh please, of course they would. There's no length they wouldn't have gone to defame anything having to do with any conservative agenda. The scumbags (Franken, Moore, etc) would have had a field day. None of them are more than "Monday morning quarterbacks" who'd criticize anyone who isn't kissing their asses and paying them lip-service. At times, I think they're worse than the terrorists themselves.

Can't know for sure either way. I don't think they would have (I wouldn't have), you think they would. Whatever, it's pointless.

And Rod Paige thinks that teachers are terrorists, too.

Hey, I'm sure SOME extreme Bush-haters would. I wouldn't agree with them, and I don't think most people would.

Most people didn't know who OBL was before 9/11. If Bush would have went after him and killed him then, there would have been cowboy blaming.
To be honest, that is probably WHY Clinton didn't assassinate him.
I HONESTLY believe that had Clinton KNOWN beforehand he would have taken him out.

Like I said, of course there would have been the few extremist nuts yelling "murderer". But they wouldn't have represented the majority of people.
Anyway, an interesting quote from the article at CNN:
Steve Coll, in his recently published book "Ghost Wars," says that the Clinton administration at one time planned to seize bin Laden at Tarnak Farm but never carried out the mission, in part over concerns about killing innocent women and children, as well as legal disagreements within the administration.
