No is the simple answer. One of the smartest people I know is a rank progressive, very socialist in his outlook. Brilliant guy, but very confused about politics and political ideology. That doesn't make him, or a great many other Libbies stupid, it makes them misguided.
However, there can be no doubt that since at least the 1980 election, the left has been demonstrably attempting to convince the American public that to be conservative is to be stupid. They painted Reagan as a dodering fool, a dinosaur still seeing Reds under every bed, and laughed him off as some sort of Hollywood (today, of course, everyone in Hollywood is a jr. Einstein) knucklehead who was kind and grandfatherly, but really too dense to be in national politics. They've done the same thing every since with EVERY conservative from dog-cather up to president. Can any Libbie in here deny the fact that they truly believe GW Bush is as stoopid as a brick and that he's simply a puppet of eeeevvviiilll star chamber masters like Rummy and Ashcroft? You all believe that, admit it! The left-biased media has gone on for weeks laughing at Bush's mispronunciations as if a man who speaks millions of public words a year WOULDN't miss a few...remember what they did to Quayle? Dan Quayle is not a stupid man, but the entire nation was led to believe it because he misspelled potato...
Neither side is filled with idiots, but the left actually BELIEVEs the right is. That's the differnce. The right knows there are some very smart people on the left. Everyone on the left assumes that everyone on the right is an idiot, and therein lies one of the problems that is insurmoutable: one cannot engage in truly rational and productive discourse with people who in their hearts believe you to not only be eeeevvviiiilll but who also believe you are stoopid.
It won't end until eithe the left implodes upon itself or the left as a whole decides they want to stop wallowing in the mud and elevate the discourse. It wasn't conservatives who brought political discourse into the gutter, but now that some on the right are responding in kind, most on the left are shocked--shocked!--and absolutely infuriated at those who would dare use what the left thought were tactics it held the patent on.
Maybe you did. But the copyright has run out.
